E53 2004 Navigation Display - dead pixels

Post by X5-D-Sport » Tue Apr 18, 2017 12:48 pm

Will cleaning/refitting the ribbon cable in the E53 Cassette/Nav-Unit possibly remove/clear dead grey pixels
in the display ?

The display is also dull / browney colour & never shows up blue sea/water or green land etc... its always dull.

Penny for your thoughts.

1.  Unlikely as that indicates single TFT failure or address line fault at that pixel.  If it was a whole row then may be, but not usually single pixels

2.  You can try refitting the ribbon and see what happens.  Others report that as being successful  :)

Try it, it's quick and easy. I did the first bit (not opened up for the inner one) and went from dull grey brown everything to clear difference between blue and green. Planning on doing the inner one to at a later date.

Under a turbo swap presently (fingers crossed it fixes her!)

Are there any guides on how to do this? I've got dead pixels in my display too.

Dead single pixels usually means a new display panel.  There was a thread from a year or so back about how to do the ribbon though... :)

EDIT:  Found this thread with pictures

Well..... a partial result....
Stripped & cleaned the ribbon connectors at both ends...
The display is a tad brighter & the sea is now BLUE instead of brown lol...

I still have 3 batches of dead pixels & a vertical green line on the right side... so I guess I need to hunt out another LCD block ?

If you are OK messing about with electronics, I remember reading a thread on Xoutpost several years ago which detailed how to replace the display and which display panel was the direct swap out.  Worth hunting for if you have time.
