2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
New member here so hi all,
My wife was driving her X3 when the DDE light came on. The car lost power and still runs but I presume in limp mode as it's got no power.
Took it to the garage and they had fault diagnosed it to have 11 faults.... they don't seem to know what's up though. All the faults occurred at similar time so I think they are secondary faults that all have a common Primary fault.
I will be collecting the car tomorrow so will be able to provide what has failed. I think glow plugs were mentioned.
I do recall when the car is started it struggles before starting which may be an indicator of something.
Does anyone know what I could check once I get the car back? Or ideas what could be the issue.
Many thanks

Re: 2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
Faults relating to glow plugs, could be that when the glow plugs fail it will not regen the DPF, normally you would get a DPF pressure differential fault light.
The 2.0 ltr engine seems to suffer from turbo failure more than the 3.0 d . Which can result in power loss too.
I had a problem with my 840 CI when it used to go into limp mode due to a collapsed cat, so there is many things that can cause a car to go into limp mode, so hopefully it's something that can be sorted.

A lot of the time when it goes into limp home mode its a blocked EGR valve personal experiance

Faults diagnosed by BMW or an Indy? Are they still present, or historic?
Once you have the codes that are still present after a reset it will be easier to work on from the collective memory on here.
Oh and

Hi,
Thanks for replies I'm off to collect the car now, if it was dpf I thought a dpf light would come on. I've read something about the turbos being a little weak,
The car was diagnosed at a halfords autocentre
Will report back
Cheers

Re: 2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
Hi,
I have the fault list, most of the faults seem to be relating to emissions stuff.
Particulate filter system faulty
Comms between glow duration and engine control unit faulty
Glow plugs 1 amd 4 atenuation faulty
Multi function steering wheel faulty
Boost pressure deviation
Engine oil quality sensor faulty
Boost pressure control deviation
Exhaust gas recirculation actuator faulty (ARF)
Exhamst gas recirculation valve plausibility
Also it whistles whilst driving
Please start scratching heads as I'm stuck for ideas. I will be looking for a bmw specialist in swindon area today...
Many thanks

Re: 2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
It's suggesting emmisions fault which assumes the turbo vanes are carbon gummed effecting the EGR
Though
I'm thinking it's one of the boost hoses cracked / split cause lack of back pressure.
Best checking inlet hoses too and fro intercooler & vacuum lines
Though, remote diagnosis is difficult what's the age / mileage ?

Hi, it's a 57 plate and its on 10k miles,
I was thinking that perhaps the glow plug controller has gone as it has been rough starting/idling for a bot amd if the glow plugs ain't running properly once the is running then it's going to run poor and more soot and crap to block stuff up.
:'(

Re: 2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
Glow plugs are only to get the engine running in the first few turns, or when there is a DPF Regen under way. We have seen glow plug faults causing the DPF issues as it won't regen without them all working. You are recommended to change the glowplugs controller as well. Failed plugs tend to take the controller out too.

Glow plugs and glowplug controllers are very common failures on the X3/5. I did mine the other week. The whistling sound and low boost sounds like an aftercooler pipe adrift or split. EGR valves are vacuum operated, not a lot to go wrong with them apart from getting clogged with carbon that can be sorted with taking it off and cleaning it out with carb cleaner. Split or perished vacuum hose maybe.

Re: 2.0D X3 2007 DDE fault light and limp mode
Thanks, it's just strange for all the faults to come together... il change the glow plugs and controller see what happen,
Would the part number be on the controller and glow plugs? Don't want to get them wrong
Finally can the controller be changed without programming?
Many thanks

This is the controller I bought from EBay, I got the glow plugs from Euro Car Parts.
Put you last 7 digits of your vin into real OEM to check to see what controller is relevant to your car though.
I fitted the blanking plates and removed the swirl flaps as the intake manifold had to come off to fit the glowplugs and controller. ( controller doesn't need coding )
I used loads of penetrating fluid on the glowplugs whilst changing the controller so it had chance to soak in. Tricky job to do as access is tight. People have snapped them off in the head, so be careful.
this is a screen shot, the eBay link didn't work

I've changed a few glow plugs in my time, always a scary job...thanks for the info, most helpful... il look to order in the morning..
I have some leak detector fluid/soapy water so gonna give the pipework a good looking at tomorrow as well...
Nice one

Hi, it's a 57 plate and its on 10k miles,[/quote]
Only 10k miles on a 10 year old car, I thought mine was low @58k.
If you haven't done the swirl flap blanks do that at the same time.
I would also check the hidden computer to check your car is reaching +80c on a drive. Thermostats are again a common fault with DPF/emission faults.

Check the thermostat. (If it never reaches exactly middle of the gauge) then your dpf will not regen.
If you say 10k on a 10 year old car, it could have a lot to do with short journeys and not getting up to temp and therefor never running the regen.
