Left side speakers not working

Post by Livelee » Mon Apr 03, 2017 7:53 pm

Hi.  More often than not the entire left side speakers will not work on our x5. (56 plate 3.0d).  Sometimes they are working so i'm confident the speakers physically work.

Any pointers on where to start, is this a common issue etc.

Many Thanks

Dan

Most common issue is the BM 54 module in the boot if it's got  factory satnav. baris from Cartronics can repair them or even upgrade them .

Check for signs of damp in the area around the battery.  You could have corrosion in the huge Quadlock connector block between the amp and speakers.

The BM54 is a known weak spot, but intermittent speakers could be either a dry joint in the amp itself or corroded/bad/loose pins in the connector.

Another vote for the BM54 unit - its in the boot, btw, not behind the dash.  BMW were really stupid when mine went on the blink a while ago - exactly the same symptoms. Car is still on extended warranty and even though I told them that the symptoms were pretty well 100% the BM54 /radio unit, the tech (their "master" tech no less) arhued that he had never, ever known a BM54 unit to fail, ever, and it was "more likely to be the DSP amp .......so amp was duly changed and car returned, allegedly "fixed".  Except of course, it wasn't. Their idea of "fixing" it was to turn up the working speakers full tilt so I wouldn't notice..........as if!

When I challenged them about the lies, I was told it was a "misunderstanding" and they were "waiting for a part" from Germany and I was "meant to be informed" .  What "part" was this, I asked?  The BM54 unit of course.......

Loads of posts all over internet about dry solder joints and failure.    Baris apparently does a good job and adds extra function to the unit - hopefully mine will last another 10 years, though.

Beautiful.  Thank you all.  Exactly what I needed to read.  I'll get it out and sent off.

.....

While i'm here, does anybody know where to source the rear door speaker grilles?  I've just got an x3 so the x5 will be for sale so i'm just tidying up the little issues she has before sale.

Many Thanks

Dan
