Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W-30 LL

Hello.
I used to purchase Castrol Edge 5W-30 oil for my 3.0d however that oil is discontinued. I then purchased the nearest replacement to it which is Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W-30 LL, which dose not specifically state BMW LL-04 but mentions the following ACEA C3,MB-Approval 229.31,MB-Approval 229.51,Porsche C30,VW 504 00,VW 507 00.

The current recommended BMW LL-04 IS Castrol Edge Titanium 0w-30 FST. However I have read that the Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W-30 LL is as follows:

Use in place of Castrol Formula SLX LongLife II (now discontinued).Castrol EDGE TITANIUM 5w-30 LL FST fully synthetic engine oil can be used instead of Castrol edge professional 5W-30 FST (which I think was the main dealer recommended oil)

So am I ok to use Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W-30 LL, what is essentiall the difference between it and 0W-30?

Hi zaw,
Couple of things you can do in addition to the 5 -30 thing.
You could try phoning the BMW service desk for help.

Another thing you can do is check out the API rating on the old oil if possible as your new oil should be the same or a better rating.

Another marque uses Millers Oils, these guys at Millers oils are friendly and helpful. They have helped me over several vehicles and even a ten Tonne log splitter on the hydraulic and engine oil. The help line is first class. No there is no free oil for me out of this. Its just they are good.
Might be inconvenient flushing one oil out for another .

For your info.
The only thing that differentiates fuel is the additives thrown in (administered) at the end of the production process.

For oil its very similar.
The API rating is identical until the product receives some blending of each manufactures own additive the very end.

Castro Edge 5W-30 FST is absolutely fine as long as it meets ACEA C3 and BMW LL04. There is more than one recipe, so checking for the LL04 bit is important

0W-30 is just slightly thinner when cold and is also OK.

Ok I contacted Castrol's Technical Support Division, they replied as follows:

The new Titanium formulation EDGE 5W-30 LL does not meet the latest BMW approvals which is why we suggest the EDGE 0W-30 as that does. However, if your car is pre 2014, then you can use the EDGE 5W-30 LL with no issues if you have a preference.

The EDGE 0W-30 is however a better option as it is aligned with BMW preference for Efficient dynamics programme – and can be used where the 5W-30 has been previously with no problems. You can also use the Magnatec 5W-30 C3 as this is also BMW LL04 approved
