cone air filter
cone air filter
I have ran aftermarket filters on all my cars, and after finding one in my shed, i fitted it to my 3.0i. It didn't like it at all. It started to stall, and then when i took it out on the road, threw up two codes, saying it had a vacuum leak. Has anyone else had issues like this?
Re: cone air filter
You havnt bypassed the MAF have you, as on mine it's part of the airfilter box, can't remember if it is on the E53.
I think aftermarket cone filters should be reserved for Ford escorts.
BMW spend millions of pounds on Getimg the airflow and fuel mixtures spot on with Mafs and O2 sensors to adjust the mixture so it's correct.
If I was you I would put it back to stock.

Re: cone air filter
Not bypass the meter, just removed the box and put cone on. I have a performance panel in my box, but the car doesn't like the cone? Is the cone working better than the box, with the amount of air it is taking in, and ECU not happy???? :noexpression:
Re: cone air filter
The air intake box has a scoop that takes in cold/ cooler air in from the grille area, trouble with aftermarket filters is they take in hotter air from the engine compartment.
The MAF is a heater element that meters the amount of air that is flowing over it by measuring the loss of heat taken away by the air flowing over it.
The calculation of how much air is sucked through a certain size pipe I.E. airbox is part of the calculation.
Fitting a cone filter alters part of that equation.
We use this system at work, I work in compressed air, and we have a flow meter that you can fit inside a pipe similar to a MAF, we then have to input the pressure and the bore of the pipe for an accurate reading, if we input a figure only a few millimetres out on the pipe bore calculation, it is WAY out on the metered flow.
If you unplug yhe MAF it probably will run ok, as it defaults to a preset setting, but may throw another fault.
So do this at your own risk.

Re: cone air filter
Thank you for the info. I wonder how others are able to run them then? I've seen loads of 330i with cones and ram air?

cone air filter
I bet you have just fitted the air fitter on the front of the air mass ,this way the air mass can not measure the amount of air correctly as its not going into the air mass straight
You need to add a minimum length of 5-6inch of pipe between the air filter and air mass to fix the problem
But using this type of cone filter will loose you power
I have a correct cold air induction kit for these which I can post pictures if needed
