All season tyres - experiences / recomendations

Hi guys - having owned a Range Rover Sport for 9 years I was less than impressed with my recent experience in the Lake District with new new E70 where I was wheel spinning and struggling for grip on essentially a wet grass car park......

My gut feeling is that JLR tend to spec their 4x4's with all season tyres that cope better with a brief trip off road so was looking to swap out my current Scorpion Verdes.

Obviously, choice of RFT's isn't great so I'm considering

Goodyear Eagle LS2
Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season

Would appreciate any feedback from anyone that's used the above or any other recommendations.

255/55/R18's - purposefully looked for a car with 255's as anything wider is always going to struggle when it gets slippy.

Be very careful about using non-approved tyres.

We are seeing an increased number of shattered diffs and transfer boxes where non '*' marked tyres are chosen, particularly on cars with staggered wheel setups.

The transmissions should be better than this, but they aren't.  Differences in rolling circumference need to be kept to a minimum.  Some tyres, although the correct sizes yield more than 30mm between axles and this will break things.  Any kind of jerkiness on full lock at low speed is a sure sign of imminent failure.

Range-Rover are designed to go off road properly.  BMW X cars are not!

Hi X5Sport - thanks for the advice and what ever ends up going on will be * marked.

I take your point that LRs are designed to go off road and X5s aren't but I do a bit of sailing, walking, mountain biking etc and live in a rural environment so what I'm looking for are a set of tyres that will a) keep me safe on roads that aren't gritted in winter and b) won't give me any embarrassing moments in muddy car parks. 

My personal opinion is that wheel / tyre choice has the biggest influence on performance once it gets slippy?

Pirelly scorpion mud + snow tyres should do the job if that's what you are after . BMW Start rated .
Last time we had proper snow I passed 3 LR's who were stuck. Smugly I had winter tyres on and sailed past.
Its all about what shoes you have on. As you have rightly noticed, your trainers aren't much good on wet grass or mud.
I know its a much argued subject and each to their own on this one , but the theory that thinner tyres dig down and find grip is not one I always subscribe to. A fatter/wider tyre will always have a larger contact area and thus should = more grip.
I have 315 wide winters on my E70 and I cannot say that I have noticed the wider tyre having any disadvantage in snow or mud , not that I go offroad. The odd muddy field and thats it.  I have certainly not got stuck. Given the low suspension articulation on an X5 ( compared to a LR) I suspect the last thing you want is the X5 digging itself down looking for grip and beaching itself.
Its a fact that articulation will come into it. Once the X5 cocks a wheel its kind of done.

With those 18" wheels you have on you probably havnt got the staggered set up so if you havnt youdont need star rated tyres, just 4 of the same .
