BMW insurance

Post by acideraser » Thu Feb 03, 2011 2:33 pm

This is an old question but i am interested in BMW insurance? Looking into different insurance options for new X5 I have 4 choices now:
BMW Insurance
Churchill - same price as BMW
Direct Line - same price as above two but they also offer 2 month for free (12 for 10)
Aviva - my current car is with them so will ask if they can match Direct Line quote when time comes

I noticed that web interface of first 3 is almost identical all the way through the quote, also read somewhere that all three have RBS behind them. I wonder if there is any real benefit of having BMW insurance, or I should just take the one offering best quote?

I think you should be looking for the most cost effective insurance which covers your needs.

I have just purchased an X5, and I am finding a lot of insurance companies require a tracker. Are you getting the same?

first when I tried gocompare tracker was not required for the quote, but I was quoted enormous premiums. A friend of mine suggested to try with tracker and that reduced my initial quotes 60-75,% so I am fitting tracker for sure.
If you do not intend to fit a one - there was a thread on this forum about insurers who do not require trackers to be fitted (I believe LV and Admiral were mentioned but can't guarantee)

Re tracker - it depends on who is the underwriter of the insurance company. A lot of companies are underwritten by RBS (aka UK Insurance) and need a tracker because of it. Others are underwritten by other financial companies who do not (e.g. First Alternative, Esure who are underwritten by Llloyds HBOS I think)

LV.com never needed a tracker when I had my e53 V8, nor is it required on my Touring (Wonder why ) have been with LV for 4+ years now and consistently come in with the best quotes on both of are cars (extra discount given as we insure both cars + house) Have always done the comparison sites at renewal and if I have found a btter quote they will always match or better it. Well worth a shot IMHO

Second Admiral, but try elephant and Bell (they are all the same company) I tried them all and got different quote from each and Admiral matched the cheapest.

Personally I'll be going for a tracking device for peace of mind - saw that the X5 recently came top of a leader board for most stolen luxury cars - apparently frequently to order. Just a case of figuring which device / subscription is best. I understand some are easier for a thief to find and remove than others. Does anyone know if there's an accepted best tracker?

Some insurance companies put there premium up if you state you have a tracker fitted.
If you look on the Internet there seams to be plenty of devices that disable tracking systems, but they only go on about employers trackers being disabled, not sure if the anti theft devices use a similar tracking system. If buying one I would check with the tracking company to make sure you cannot just plug one of these devices in and then the system does not send a signal out.

Do you really want a car back after it has been stolen obviously a personal choice, after having car stolen the only thing I wanted to see was a cheque. After being stolen for me would not feel like my car anymore with my personal space invaded and I did not lose a penny in fact I gained.

Admiral, LV, Elephant and First Alternative are not good for me - either refuse to insure me or premiums are too high for some reason, so i'll stick to direct line or aviva + tracker. Not sure if i'd want my stolen car back or not but tracker does not guarantee it will be back, however I'll most likely take GAP RTV insurance - kind of piece of mind for £300-£400 and 4 years period.

I think BMW insurance is underwritten by Allianz or Zurich

A lot of insurnce companies use the same software to run behind their quotation systems hence they all look the same.

I bought BMW RTV GAP insurance even though the X6 was bought cash. I also bought their Tyre Insurance. Both are provided by EuroCover - which will be a subsidiary of someone no doubt. My car cover is with Aviva and I've not had ny problems with them. what I tend to do is get an online quote from them and then force them to match it at renewal time. Has worked successfully for the last five years.. :D

The RTC on Xmas Eve was all Dealt with over the phone and was totally hassle free. The premiums actually came down with the change from the E53 to the E71. I was required to fit a security device, but even if not mandated I would have done so anyway. Sometimes it's the postcode that determines whether you do or don't need said devices. All of our insurance quotes have mandated their fitting regardless of which company we tried. :?

Just a heads up on both GAP & Tyre ins. don't pay the asked price. The dealers all have margins in them and the F&I guy will be only to happy to do a deal as he is targeted on them. If he doesn't budge suggest that you will buy a generic one of the interweb I got my Tyre ins. down from £295 to £200 for 3 years/5tyres.

@acid - Have you tried Privilege, again part of DL/RBS this is who we were with before LV and they were always cheaper than DL

I'm with Zurich and no tracker required for them and I would not want it back either. As you may have read on here there are quite a few people who actually have trackers in their x's but they're not currently initiated. You never know you may have one there and all you need to do is get a new contract :-)
