Best Exhaust
Best Exhaust
Hi peeps
I'm after a nice exhaust system to make the 4.6 sound a little more grunty. I've looked about but can't find much. Does anyone know the best setup and best place to get one.
Maybe a forum member has a system for sale.
Cheers Lewis

Re: Best Exhaust
Hi
I'm not sure many change them, I think there have been a couple who have removed boxes from the systems.
There was a chap James Whippy who had a 4.6 with an aftermarket exhaust noisy but it affected cars performance, loosing power he had it when checked.
If you look at link below Raj 4,8 that had a custom exhaust from profusion I have no idea of cost
, but would think at leat 1k. He was selling it but wanted a 4.8 standard exhaust, I can confirm the sound was nice not too loud but throaty.
So it may be worth a phone call to profusion at least you know.
I did research it when I had e53 4.4 and think ac schnitzer do them but again silly money

TBH this was my thinking on costa d to be fair expensive for an old car.
Coming from a 4.2 supercharged xf with custom exhaust I just felt the x5 sounded very revvy and not throaty for a v8.
Probley just my ears [emoji85]

Re: Best Exhaust
There is a guy in the US who experimented with the 4.6 exhaust, seemed to have plenty of money to try different things, It would appear for whatever reason that the 4.6 has a pretty good exhaust as standard. He couldn't find anything that gave him more power, tried center box removal, great sound but well down on power and what ever he tried he got a cold start rattle which reduced when warm but never disappeared. Same with complete systems. He reckons the only reason others don't mention it is cos if you just spent 1k plus you don't want to admit it's there. In the end he settled for removal of center box and replaced with 2 resonators, 12" long by 4" each, said sound was great, no loss of power and rattle was virtually undetectable. Something to ponder over. He may be full of shit or it could be cheap V8 sound??

Re: Best Exhaust
I've done a lot of development work with assorted OEM's re exhaust technology...
The OEM supplied system is "tuned" to suit the engine, the required back pressures, gas flow speeds, gas expansions & harmonics also....
Many of these so-called performance exhausts, are simply NOT scientifically designed.... they may look good, & make a bloody awful noise etc... but usually never increase performance or economy.... just the noise.
The standard E53 Exhausts are actually pretty good.
If you want more growl from the rear, remove the rear boxes, & get a good mechanic / welder to carve open the top of the silences, pull out the wadding at REAR END only - not both.... You can also junk some of the mesh inside too. Any wadding in the centre of the silencer can go too.
The result is an easier gas flow, the front wadding keeps the crackle to a minimum, but the removal of the rear & centre wadding allows a nice burble/growl sound/note & may enhance the economy a few mpg & performance by 20Hp max.
AND you save £1000.
You can always get some pretty & shiny tail pipes of e-bay for very little.

Re: Best Exhaust
i'm sure your right in everything you say, and I'd love to try some of those tips just to get a little extra growl, but I want the best of both worlds, ie I would want to return to what I've got if I didn't like what it turned into and ripping out interiors of boxes means that would be impossible. The rattle I talked about only seems to effect the 4.6. I probably will, in the summer try the resonators as I see this as an easy DIY way of returning to standard with minimal mods to standard system

Re: Best Exhaust
Agreed my friend, my way is rather permanent.
But, I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve, & it worked costing me just £25 in clamps, a bit of welding gas & an afternoon getting filthy....
AND
left the £1,000 saved.... to spend on tyres, fancy brakes, new door speakers, CD auto-changer, a Suspension pump & a large selection of new CD's, porn, hookers, tarts & more porn lol.
have a great week.

Your maths must be slightly different to mine bud, think you are missing at least one zero off the end
