Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
Re: Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
I am a firm believer in the * star only tyres.
I have recently fitted 4 new Pirelli tyres too mine at a cost of £750.
The E83 does not come with RFT.

Re: Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
Hi well worked out , it got a bit confusing with saying you were ordering 225/40/19 all round hence what I said about the stretched tyres . At the end of the day a test was done a few months ago on the general size of cheap tyres compared with star marked tyres the results on 19" tyres were an amazing 30mm difference in height no wonder all of the problems have occured with the transfer diffs and gear boxes .
Unfortunately BMW s suffer from the issues caused by cheap tyres although they tell owners to only use star marked tyres most people look at the cost issue rather than recommended by the manufacturer.

Ps are the tyres no good on the new car ? As runflats have come on a long way since first produced !

Re: Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
The X3 ran great on the test drive, apparently due to good info ( X5 Sport and Jagr ) the E83 X3 never came supplied with Runflats . It has a jack and spare wheel.
It was my typo that caused ALL of the misunderstanding

HIDS and LED's have arrived, I need to find out about swirl flaps etc. Need to get my vin really and do some digging.[/quote]
From my experience it will have the larger 32mm swirl flaps.
On my facelift '56 2.0d (150bhp) it had the smaller 22mm but my current SD had the larger ones.
I fitted PMW blanks and can't fault the quality.
It is not a difficult job really, when I did mine the most difficult part was removing the cabin filter tray. On the 2.0d I didn't have too as engine smaller.

Re: Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
Cheers, I will order the larger size, I have read that if they have them from 06/07 they are the larger size.
I am tempted to do the air filter too, guess it's the same as the 3.0 d E53. PITA to do, but no point doing the swirl flaps and not the air filter, as I'm almost there with all the covers removed.Im guessing the crankcase breather will be a vortex type already on a 58 plate.?

Hi
Using your existing set up it shows a 1.1% difference in the overall wheel circumference which is small, and given that is the standard BMW set that level of difference must therefore be acceptable to BMW. And it's transmission to avoid problems.
If you change to same size tyre on all wheels even with different size rims the overall circumference is saying it the same, even when fitted to a smaller rim size, butworth checking yourself. Again the appearance of them may look a bit different on the car.
If you change to all the same tyre on

Thanks Graeme for the really helpful link to the calculator.
I have filled in my dimensions, hope this is of assistance to other members in the future.
I have ordered a set of tyres and will measure them before /after installation , as well as measuring the original setup to see if there is a big differential.

Re: Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
Picked up the X3 today, on the drive home in the wet we started to feel a lurch/ rough down change when coming to a stop, also when in slow moving traffic I could feel a slipping / slight judder of the axles/ transfer box .!!!!
I was not a happy bunny as there was no evidence of this when I test drove it last week

Picked up the X3 today,
After the tyres were fitted I went on a drive and instantly felt and drove much smoother. All the slipping and lurch has gone

Re: Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.
Hi
Congrats on picking up the car.
I like the idea of plugging in your carly app and finding faults before you took the car away, so the dealer agreed to fix/pay for the glow plugs, it certainly saves a lot of arguments, and I am sure more people will ask to do this in future when buying cars as so many faults are hidden.
I think when I read about the earlier post about the previous tyre set up with a big difference it seems to confirm the idea of "*" rated tyres avoiding problems, and hopefully it has fixed any issue with the judder.
Finally a lot of people like tinkering/ improving their cars and when that process has finished and there is no more to do I think you get bored, and that's when the danger occurs as you then start looking around for a new car to do the same with.
