STAR * RATED TYRES AND AFTERMARKET RIMS (RE: Knocking from trans box) !!!

Hi All,

As you know the E83 X3 suffers from knocking noises from the transfer box if you got dodgy tyres on.

So my X3 has OEM 17" rims all round (none staggered) with the same budget tyres all round (235/55/17), although they're the same budget tyres with same even tread wear, its still knocking, from what I've read, I'm confident getting 4x new BMW Star rated tyres will fix the problem as it has done for everyone else, (have no idea how changing tyres can stop knocking when my current tyres are all the same size all round anyway)

But, I'm also thinking about upgrading to bling bling 20"/21" rims, but do you think I still need Star rated tyres for aftermarket rims? or is Star tyres only for OEM sized rims? because its not easy to get Star rated tyres for 21" rims, they might not even exist! What is everyone doing who have upgraded to bigger wheels? Anyone have trans box knocking who have upgraded?

The advice is always stick with '*' rated tyres on any rim size that matches OEM.  If there is a 20" for the X3 then stick to the relevant sizes.

It is possible your diff issue was caused by a previous set of tyres and is just becoming more obvious, but I'll let our resident hardware specialist come up with a definitive answer.

Star rated tyres will not gonna change anything (normal set up). Transfer box is gone.
