Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Normal operating temps on dash indicator
I've noticed that my coolant dash indicator never gets to "12'o clock" and only gets as high as the photo below after 30 mins to 1 hour of driving. I'm guessing that's not normal? Coolant level is spot on and no OBD faults. Coolant temperature sensor?
I'm having some cold start issues, and can't see that this would be directly related unless anyone can see how?

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Seems to be a common problem on the X3, one of your thermostats is stuck open.( main & EGR ). Best to change both, can be done DIY if your ok with the spanners.
Also glow plugs and glow plug controllers are not uncommon to go.
Jäger has done a good write up on the forum. Use the search button to find them.
Also if the thermostat, and/ or the glowplugs are faulty it won't regen the DPF.

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Mine sat in the same place this time last year and do so now as well. Once the outside temp warms up a little it moves hotting and to vertical. Heater is always nice and warm though
Might have a look at the thermostat........
Is it worth it?

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
I bought a c110 scanner and did some checks of the live data, coolant never seems to get over 65C.
Bought a replacement main stat and EGR stat. Done the EGR one as that was easy, but need to go back and do the main one as it hasn't made any difference.
Access looks a bit tricky, think fan will have to come out to get some space

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Never thought of the scanner. Got one for my z4. Think I'll plug in and see what's what next time I use the x.
Cheers - I'll report back soon.................

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Put the scanner on today after about 15 miles. Needle bang in the middle and temp at 83 degrees.
Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Ideally 90 to 110, depends on what the thermostat is rated at.

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
Mine was left like this for some time and it ended up causing my DPF filter to block. As the engine never thought the car was up to temp, it never burnt off the DPF which it only does at full temp. Unblocking the DPF is a bloody nightmare using a laptop or expensive for replacement/repair.

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
done today as part of a small service. £260 all in with gen BMW stats. temp needed now firmly back at 12.00 o'clock and engine running at 88 degrees

Did my thermostat this afternoon on the X3, ended up loosing a spring clip from one of the small pipe adapters on the EGR, managed to do a temp fix with an old split pin. Will order a new bit as soon as I get the part number off real OEM.
Took it for a run 88 degrees, which is what the thermostat was rated at.
I was getting 25 mpg max before I changed the stat, reset while out and showing 39 mpg

Re: Normal operating temps on dash indicator
I was getting 39 mpg before changing the stat! May nip up a bit more now, who knows. 120 mile run on the cards tomorrow so we'll find out.
