Inspection 2 needed for 3.0d?

Post by jason32 » Tue Feb 07, 2017 8:57 pm

hey guys,

I just bought an e53 2004 3.0d, mileage is 101K, last service recorded in the book is on 65K so I dont know if any work has been done after that. The dashboard prompt shows oil service due in a couple of thousand miles.

I've been a service with an indy next week, so which service should I go for? I dont want to do inspection 2 if its not necessary?

There are no warning lights on dash and car runs smooth.

It's not called Insp 2 with a diesel, it's the 3rd service. The fact the cars done 36k since last service it needs a minimum of 3rd service.

Its your call but if I'd just bought a car with 101k on the clock and I was unsure as to what had been done Id go for the full service for piece of mind otherwise it's a false economy and you may just be storing up potential issues. Having a good poke around during a through service may spot other issues that you would want to know about. when i buy car I always budget circa £500 to spend on 'stuff' that is just going to need done but I appreciate cash may be tight and so on. The fuller service includes oil/ oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter, checking its a vortex breather (but I think we touched on that on your other post) to name abut a few. Brake fluid needs done every two years so that may crop up soon too.

You say you don't want to do it if it is not necessary. With the information that you have available you, nor anyone else, simply cannot know if it is, or is not, necessary.

Honestly, just do it

Well that'a question you need to put to BMW isnt it? Get the info off them and then get someone else to do it. Its just a service. Most garages BMW inluded charge for the fluids and bits and pieces over and above the service charge unless its a basic service in which case its often all inclusive.
But as I say you need to ask them what they charge not us. Some charge more than others and some charge a lesser hourly rate for the older vehicles.

Pick up the phone.

A full service from BMW dealer will cripple you. Try and find a recommended Indy nearby if I was you

Just wanted to get an idea so I would know what to ask from the indy guy...there is one indy near my house and have booked with them for this week. They have serviced and worked on my 318ci for the last 4 yrs, but not sure about the quality of parts they use thats why wanted to explore other options for the x5.

If your bothered about parts, you can source OEM parts, I.E. filters and oil from Euro Car Parts and just have them charge you labour.
I'm a service engineer and we fit usually Mann filters which are what 99% of manufacturers call OEM.
BMW don't make filters, VW don't make filters/ oil.
In fact BMW or VW don't make gearboxes / turbos/ exhausts/ tyres etc etc.
Most generic car parts are sourced outside.
