F15 March Delivery!! miss the VED change

Post by Njones1977 » Mon Feb 06, 2017 10:24 am

Hi All,

I'm very excited partly because I am getting my F15 40d (blk saphire, Ivory Leather, piano black, Msport + pack) in March.  I was even more excited when I was told that if it is not registered until April 1st then I will have to pay £500 a year in additional VED............

Has anyone looked into this?  it seems a bit harsh!

My new X5 will be delivered last week of February first week of March, I expressly said I did not want it if it goes into April.

Hard to believe that a 31st of March car will be £185 and a 1st of April car will be £495 a year for the next six years.

They won't be selling many cars then.

Its utter bollocks/ robbery etc etc.

The govt needs to be sent a clear message by motorists as we are NOT a cash cow for whenever they are short of cash.

Don't start me off about it...........seething as it is.

Part of the change also means anything other that a true 'zero emissions' car (electric and possibly hydrogen fuelled) that produce no CO at all will pay tax.  More and more cars were going into the zero tax bracket though you can hardly blame manufacturers for doing that!

The one that puzzles me is the £40k limit.  I can see Dealers being stuck with cars or offering significant discounts to keep below the break point in order to shift stock.  Alternatively we could see UK models going 'down spec'?

My Superb 3 was just over £41k new but I get an 11% Discount which means a top of the line model for less than several lower spec cars (or a lower spec for even less).  If I was buying again I would make sure that the discount was maintained or I would not have bought it.

VAG have 'down specced' this model from this year with standard options on mine becoming expensive cost options.  I suspect we are going to see more of this, although owners of the new Superb suspect VAG made the change because this model is outselling their other brands in many countries - which is (to them) embarrassing perhaps?

Whats not very clear (to me anyway) is how the value of the car is worked out.
Is it the base model car minus extras that determines the tax bracket or is it the total cost of the car including all extras?
If its the former I can see a lot of cars being bought with just enough extras to keep it under the 40k and then stuff being retrofitted later if possible.
If a dealer sells a car that is supposed to be 50k for under 40k, is the car still classed as a 50k car?
Or are the tax brackets designed around the RRP of cars that nobody really ever pays?

It's the total LIST price of vehicle and extras that counts, the P11D value in other words.  It does not include the first year's road fund licence which would otherwise push some cars over the limit.

It's list price that counts, discounts are totally ignored.

Likewise, mine was due week beginning March 20th, so squeeky-bum-time as to whether any delay would mean it didn't get registered in time......but, mine got built a week ahead of schedule, is now on a boat almost at Bremerhaven, and is now due at dealership in the week beginning Feb 27th
I hadn't originally intended to change car until end of this year, but the announcement of the new VED rates tempted me to bring that forward to time it to just beat the deadline.
X5 40d SE on order
