Hi,
I've ordered new X5 xdrive30d SE 2 weeks ago but now thinking maybe I should have ordered 40d instead. I didn't do a test drive because of broken shoulder (skiing accident :) ) so cannot tell myself.
I wonder if there is noticeable difference in acceleration (0-62m, 60-100), motorway driving - between 30d (245bhp) and 40d (306 bhp) and between 30d (245bhp) and 35d (286bhp?). I drove my friend's 35d and was very impressed so would like to know what to expect.
Also what will be real MPG on 30d?
Car is said to be arriving end March/early April, can't wait ...
Currently drive Honda CRV 2.0 petrol (148bhp) if this helps.

Hi i've just put down a deposit to buy a 35d(used) and certainly having test driven both 30d and 35d i could find a difference in the power. It was very good. Not sure about 40d but certainly 35d would be what I would be looking at. I think fuel wise its barely a difference on paper, someone might come along and advised you better on it.

I've recently bought a used 3.0d and the MPG on it is p*ss poor.
Lucky if I get over 20 round town.

I may need to be corrected on this - others know more but...

In the pre-facelift guise of the E70's they were badged as:

30d (single 3.0 litre turbo) or 35d (twin 3.0 litre turbo)

For the newest facelift E70's that has now gone to:

30d (single 3.0 litre turbo) and 40d (twin 3.0 litre turbo) with an xdrive in there somewhere.

Acceleration is said to be noticeable between the two but economy is also said to have been improved (can't be sure I don't have the figures in front of me). But if you have any doubt, go for the 40d so you never have to ask yourself that question when the 30d arrives. Economy shouldn't be that much more but the power is said to be noticeable. Think about insurance/tax/etc too...

Oh and a thread running at the minute regards economy - I have linked it to an old one too. Most say economy is not good against official figures :thumbsdown:

Thank you all for replies. Not sure what to do now - change order or not... Checking insurance quotes now
I'll probably stick to 30d (it's facelift new 8-speed t/m, 245 bhp) for 2-3 years, after that can always change it to a new more powerful model.

Why not just remap vehicle or just by 40d, what kind of performance are you looking for?

Hi NewX5, this is going to be my first BMW after Honda CRV. This will be mainly family car so I am not after any particular performance, just don't want to be disappointed with what I am getting though don't believe that BMW can be disappointing :P .
Probably just want kind of reassurance that with 3.0d this heavy 4x4 will still be fun to drive and have be quick enough for overtaking on the motorway.

I was thinking about remapping which looks like a good option but not sure what will happen to the warranty - this will be a brand new car...
this is probably a question for different thread but is there a way to remap without losing official warranty?

I use a New (19th Nov 2010) 30d and you will be more than happy with the peformance coming from a CRV, previous cars for me where RS4 cab, 911C4 to name the last 2. There is loads of info on site about remapping not something I have ever done so can not comment, the sports mode is really rapid on both models 30d/40d also I have found the larger wheels make a lot more noise in the 30d over the the standard 19s.

I have come from X5s into the CRV and regardless of which car you go for you won’t be disappointed The very first X5s 3.0d had only 186bhp and they shifted.

I went for Dynamic pack with 20" 336 alloys and running boards because i like the look wide x5, so will have to get used to the noise somehow ;)

Having got a 40d in an X6 I can say it is a very quick vehicle indeed for 2 tonnes. I doubt there's much difference between the E70 and E71 but I haven't checked the quoted figures.

I'm seeing a 5mpg improvement over our E53 on the same journey, and that's with less than 1400 miles on it so far. I'm on a long motorway run this weekend and hope to see mid to upper 30's mpg wise. Real world figures never match the OEM quoted figures as the test is so unrealistic and conducted with the vehicle stationary on a rolling road! The DfT were challenged recently about the differences and imply responded that it enabled purchasers to make a comparison, but that they were 'indicative' for compatative purposes only and may not truly represent what an Owner might achieve given the number of additional variables! In other words you get what You get.

Smoother and more relaxed drive with that lower range turbo

I've driven lots of 5er and X5s with both single and twin turbo and it is very noticeable

Not sure these new generation X5s are that tuneable yet although DMS have just announced that they can remap the 40d but it is getting ever harder for the tuners

Same here with my X5 40d ... although I still feel it could use some more especially around 1300-1800 rpm :) :)

As for the mid to high 30's mpg ... no way you will ever reach that .... at least I never evr manage to get even close. I average now on 25 mpg.
