Burning Rubber!

I was going for continentals but as I have run out of body parts to sell after the gearbox woes, I stuck another set of Bridgestones on, £670 fitted.
That's not a bad price for wide 19" tyres. I will be look for some in a month or two for the summer wheels. I take it these were non rft's?

Yup, standard tyres, non run flats. ER30's so a summer tyre, can usually get away with not having to use a winter tyre down here.

I'd be going 255/50 and 285/45 19 as per standard sizes...
Not changing the sizes bud, just the make of tyre. Off to chat with the tyre guy and see what he recommends after work
Fitted Nexum on mine £470 full set done 15.000 on them so far and plenty thread still there.

Re: Burning Rubber!
Well I've just had a blow out at 80 (err 60 officer) on the A14. Not much fun emptying all my tools and bags of plaster out on the side of the road with trucks going past at 60 inches from your head..
Rear tyres are seriously worn on the inside edges so I have ordered a pair of Prestivo 285 45 19 thru my mate who runs a local garage. The tread pattern and ratings are identical to the Nexens I have on. I'm not complaining at £102 fitted for the pair. Next will be a load of rear suspension parts..

Re: Burning Rubber!
No matter how good bad or indifferent those tyres are at that price it would suggest that the big name tyre makers are ripping people off.

Re: Burning Rubber!
and maybe get the tracking done to sort the inner edge wear .......
Proof of the pudding and all that but those tyres seem waaaaaay too cheap.

Quite possibly so but as the four corners are the only point of contact with a two tonne vehicle and the tarmac, I stick to what I know.

Re: Burning Rubber!
The tyres are that cheap as its thru trade but even Steve couldn't believe the price. The Nexens were only £86 each but I think they are the same tyre just a different name. Don't be scared by this '2 ton car on 4 patches of rubber' stuff. It's not a racing car.
Some of the expensive brand name tyres ratings- noise/wet grip etc- are actually worse than cheaper tyres.
Anyway, its an old car so I'm not spending money on dear parts. A full set of rear suspension arms and bushes can be bought for less than £150. They will last 5-10 years on the mileage I do.
And thinking back to last year when I had new fronts on, that was £80 dearer than the rears...

It's not often that I choose to take issue with things written on this forum, but I think that particular comment is naive and potentially dangerous. Folks should absolutely consider the contact between vehicle and road surface.

Re: Burning Rubber!
Of course you should consider it but that doesn't necessarily mean spending 3 times as much when the official ratings are the the same for two different named products. If people want to spend £650 for tyres that's up to them. I'm happy to boot mine for £400 (ish).
Re: Burning Rubber!
Never tried the real basic brands, but did shoe the 530d with Falkens and they were really good. They didn't wear as well as premium tyres, but i paid less and changed often.
The whole 2 ton on 4 contact points does hold true, and only the owner (and his budget) can decide what price point you go for.

Re: Burning Rubber!
I know plenty of people who would take issue with the (and his budget) They view their, in some cases very expensive cars as a means of getting from A to B, when asked why they put cheap possibly dangerous kit on it they laugh and say don't talk crap, if it was dangerous it wouldn't be on the market. Abuse it for 18/24 months and then spend 40k on another second hand car. They will never understand my point of view any more than I theirs. But we enjoy getting together and taking the piss out of each other.
