Something is nagging me that after a battery reset you needed to do a full cycle of the wheel so that it calibrates the module again. That may be all it needed.
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

I think that mine has been set to retract in and up whereas hers is set to only retract up. Why it would lose that function after removing the module is odd- removing mine didn't affect the function at all.
