Head Up Display

Post by concept » Thu Jan 12, 2017 7:26 pm

Looking at X5's now, instead of X6's, but the question is relevant to both.

Is speed limit display part of the HUD, if not, can it be coded/programmed?

You need the forward looking camera installed as well in order for that to be coded in.  TBH there are so many wrong limits recorded in the Nav data that you have to treat the data with caution.  It doesn't always see the signs on the road either.  It's useful, but don't rely on it at all.

I keep reporting the errors to the database manufacturer but it is rare that it gets done in the next update release.

Sounds an expensive retrofit.

Are there any retrofit specialists out there, I always end up tinkering...

Have a look on Realoem to see if there is an official retrofit kit.  If there is it will refer to an EBA.  That is the official set of instructions and if you ask a BMW Dealer nicely they may print out a copy for you.  It will list the part numbers you need.

Also have a look at Bmwcoders on line.  That may well tell you how simple/complex etc the job might be.

I think it has been done by a number of people but I cannot remember what the challenges were.

Have fun  :)

Looks like there are many things you can do by coding.

How easy is it?

I know on previous VAG vehicles, I looked at it, and quickly thought better of it.

As long as you have the right software and know what you are doing then it is fine.  Mess up and it gets expensive.

I have been looking at VCDS - the VAG System - for use with my Škoda Superb 3 and it is easy to brick modules, or worse, if you aren't confident with computers and the coding tools.

I've got the speed limit option on my HUD - I didn't realise it worked (!) via a front facing camera.

I thought it went off the data on the NAV. I've just updated my maps to 2017-1 and was sure some of the limits were more accurate, I must have been imagining things!

Where's the camera?

Sorry for the thread hijack  O:-)

Im in the same boat. Didnt know it worked off a camera but I have not had maps updated and speed limits that have changed around where I live show up. Even temporary speed limits show up.

The camera is forward looking and in the rear view mirror mount beside the auto light/wiper sensor.  It uses the Nav by default but changes to the local limit if it sees and reads a speed limit sign.  No sign, then it uses the Nav data.

One road near me shows as a 40mph in one direction and a 30 in the other.  It is a 30 and always has been (for 20 years now) but BMW's supplier (Navteq?) still have not updated it.
