Post by x5e53 » Wed Jan 04, 2017 10:11 pm

I hear a slight bang and a small judder when I reverse whilst turning the wheel.
Even on a flat surface (so no kerbs etc.).

Usually happens when im reversing to the right.

Any ideas?

Hard to tell if driveline or rear bushes.

Once warmed up do some kickdown acceleration from standstill or 30 mph. If you get a thud then it could be rear subframe bushes.

If noise is metallic only engaging reverse it might be auto box related.

No noise on kickdown. Only when in reverse. Even then, not 100% of time, only when reversing while cornering/turning.
Very strange. Will get all bushes checked and diff oil checked/changed. Assuming diff oil can be changed in a 4.8is, some units are marketed as 'sealed for life'.

Are you sure you haven't knocked someone off their bike???

(Surprised someone hasn't suggested similar yet....)
(not surprised i did though!!!)

There is also the possibility of the rear Handbrake shoes binding and or releasing in reverse,,,
Might be worth getting the disc/drums off and checking the internals and shoes for debris and adjustment etc...
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Ignore the 'sealed for life' line. Audi quote that too on the rear diff on Quattro models. If it's approaching 100k or indeed exceeded that, then by all means drain and refill. Always open the filler plug before dropping the drain plug in case it's seized. Stuff will come out like Mellow Birds. Check for swarf just in case.

Use correct specification gear oil to refill and don't exceed quantity or you could burst the driveshaft seals.
