steering wheel adjustment stopped

Post by themoog » Sat Jan 07, 2017 4:13 pm

Chuffin ell.. I turned the car off today and the steering wheel retracted as usual. Later I got in it and it didn't move to its memory position. And the seat won't adjust. The fuses are ok so what's next? I can't drive in a chimpanzee position for long.

You could try letting the car go to sleep, or disconnect the battery for 30 mins to clear any 'brainf8rt' the system may have suffered.

Steering wheel memory will be pointing to failure of the seat control module

Swapped with the module from the wife's car and all worked ok so my module has gone caput. I did notice that they had different part numbers even though they look identical. I put the one back in the wifes but forgot to write down the part number...goon.

Realoem will give you the current part number to look for.  Modules get replaced with newer versions so you may find there's a later one than you have fitted.

No, I put her good one back in hers after I used it in mine to set the steering wheel in the right position. If I had given her the bad one she would have gone mad..not only that but we both use her X5 but she never drives mine so her seat memory is constantly used.

Right.. I managed to track down a switch module- quite difficult as its the comfort option with 4 way head rest adjustment. I found one from a Range Rover but the label on it is BMW. I'll fit it when it stops raining.
One thing I've noticed is since I removed and replaced the module out of the wifes the steering wheel no longer retracts when the ignition is turned off. Any ideas?

That module is blown now too?  :(

Did you disconnect the battery first?  Try resetting the memory positions and see if that sorts it.  Or try to cycle it fully out and back and then see it if sorts itself out.

there is an option in the key settings on the computer to have the steering wheel retract in both directions .... you have to tick both boxes for it to do both .... maybe your module has lost that tick while your swapping them between vehicles

I installed the module in mine today -fingers were chuffin freezing- and it works fine. Wheel retracts when ignition is turned off so all good there.
If anyone has INPA and can help me reprogram her car (if that is the problem) I will throw some beer money your way. I'm located 7 miles SW of Cambridge if anyone is interested in meeting up. Ta.

Update: I cycled the wheel in/out and up/down and now it moves up out of the way when the ignition is turned off. The wife recons that's how it always was- maybe I was wrong, who knows?
