DPF Regeneration / Particulate Check Warning (E70)

Post by Domowilko » Wed Nov 16, 2016 1:39 pm

Not had the car 2 weeks and the Particulate Check Control has flagged up. The car came with a receipt showing a DPF Ultrasonic cleaning done in January this year. The car has done 97k in total and i assume a lot of short trips. How often should these things need cleaning or is it going to be time to replace (hope not).

Is there a way to kick in the regeneration in the first instance without going for a long drive and hoping it will kick in on my return?

The system should go into auto regen every 300 miles or so and needs to be fully warmed up and at a constant speed if 40mph or higher and/or approx 2,000rpm or higher for not less than 20 minutes.

If working properly you will not get any warnings.  It sounds like either yours is doing short journeys, or has hit the 'ash limit' which can occur anywhere from 90K onwards.  OEM replacement is (or was last time I asked) £1,500 plus VAT!  You may be able to get them elsewhere nowadays too.

Dealers/Specialists can 'force' a regen through the diagnostic port, or you can get the Carly App and dongle and DIY.  I believe Dealers can also put a special fluid into the exhaust that will help too.

Check your coolant temps regarding thermostats.  Numerous things will hold a regen out:

Check glow plugs ( these are utilised in regen process and if down will not perform regen to full optimisation)

Check thermostats ( temp should sit at 90'c ) this can hold car off performing regen as it waits for car to get to optimum temperature.

Check for throttle body errors aswell as that is also part of the control logic for regen's.

Well the drive did no good may be an underlying issue as per kjb1 describes. Got it booked into an indie for an opinion. Oil level showing too high on the sensor but looks ok on the stick.  :'(

Oil level error is another common one too.  If you can, just take about 500ml out and see if that sorts it.  Dealers seem to get this wrong all the time in the E70/71!

All the niggles are showing but it is 7 yr old so not too surprised, still love stepping into it. When I lower the volume from the wheel it ends up ringing someone. Have u come across that before.

looks like the DPF is clogged up to high heaven and a forced regen will not sort. Does anyone know how many times a dpf can be sent off for cleaning and any recommendations in the Stoke on Trent area for a quality clean. I am unsure to why it can be so clogged when it was cleaned in January this year.

Apparently the reader showed 606 mbar on kick over when testing the DPF.

You have to ask yourself what is causing it to clog up, not just be satisfied with remedy of cleaning it.

Check your glow plugs are all in order and working.

Check your coolant temps, change EGR thermostat for little cost it is to do so, and literally a 5 minute job.

Clearly car is suffering from failed regens.  All that back pressure will damage your turbo no doubt if you continue to drive it in current poorly state.

Either remedy the issues or have the dpf deleted and remapped to remove from ecu etc.

It will pass an mot, it wont be anytime soon that mot stations change their parameters for checking dpf is in place.

As long as its in situ, and gutted internally, this will suffice.

Your choice.

I looked at an 09 X5 recently on a local garage forecourt,  and when having a play with the vehicle settings (checking service info) found that the DPF had a fault. Priced a replacement at £991.00 for an OE spec unit.

Fair to say that I gave that particular car a massive swerve.
