Grinding and bumping at low speeds
Grinding and bumping at low speeds
Hello. I've just bought a 2005. X5 4.4 v8 auto. With 162k miles.
I've noticed a 'metal on metal' sound at around 15mph.
It does it in 1st,2nd, and 3rd gears. The auto box won't let me select 4th at the speed the noise happens but. Suspect it's a speed related issue.
It makes a lot of noise then some 'bumping' then sorts itself out and everything is how it should be.
I was wondering if it was clutch plates? It's had a new transfer box recently by the looks of things.
Your thoughts are appreciated
Cheers

Re: Grinding and bumping at low speeds
Get a gearbox code read done (BMW Dealership or Specialist with Autologic system) as that will at least give you some indication as to where to look next.
It could be anything in the transmission line and they often do not bring up warning lights but do record into the fault log.

Re: Grinding and bumping at low speeds
I did a diagnostic and it revealed nothing
Re: Grinding and bumping at low speeds
Helpful! Could be the transfer box, gearbox or a diff. Might even be a CVJ, propshaft bearing or wheel bearing (last one less likely)
Just a thought though, what tyres are fitted? Are they the correct sizes (check the label in the Driver's B-pillar) and do they have roughly the same tread depth all round?
A while back someone on here reported something similar and I think found the wrong tyre sizes/ratings or something similar fitted. Changed them and the noise went away. It may not be relevant for your car, but worth checking anyway.

Re: Grinding and bumping at low speeds
Are you sure it's not brake related?
My hand brake used to make a fair bit of iffy noises.
Don't recommend my method of stopping it though!
(Or more to the point the method forced upon me!!)

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Hi,
Dont' laugh at me but there are many heat shields under there. Could be one is worked lose or as you have recently had work done its not been put back properly and is rubbing on a shaft, prop etc etc. It could be that simples. I mention it because I have that tee shirt too after having a new gearbox fitted by a main dealer ...!!
Regards,
Nat.

Re: Grinding and bumping at low speeds
The garage says thereshe nothing wrong. Checked everything prop shafts half shafts cv joints suspension etc. Theyve put it down to the wheels not being standard but they're only 19" I can't believe the originals are smaller?
Re: Grinding and bumping at low speeds
17" available in the base model, 19" staggered set is the standard on the Sport models....unless you have non-BMW 19" wheels?

They may mean that the profiles are incorrect, causing transmission wind up, that will cause your symptoms
