X40d tracking and alignment 20 inch staggered wheels

Post by john_o » Sun Dec 18, 2016 11:17 pm

Ok.  So the front left tyre is wearing heavily on the outside edge.
Will force 2 new front tyres well before the rest of the tread is anywhere near worn.

20 inch staggered wheels and tyre setup
Star rated Michelin rft tyres

Was planning to go to hunter alignment place near me.  (Ninemeister) and get it checked out.

From forum reading appears I need to buy parts if I want to adjust camber at the front.

Bmw specs very wide so of little use

Car not damaged to my knowledge.

What spec should I get it measured against /set to, for a good road setup. Car handles great as it is.  Happy to sacrifice some tyre wear for handling but this front left is just wrong.

Can I replace only front 2 tyres without risking a diff issue?

Advise appreciated

Thanks john

The key bit will be the tread depth difference between front and rear.  If the rears still have plenty on them then you should be fine, but if close to be worn out then care needed.  No more than a couple of mm should be fine, but more than 3-4mm is maybe chancing it.

It's one of those things that some cars will be fine and others will break.  There is no hard and fast rule.  >:(

You are correct in saying the BMW specs are to wide,
Ive been running my car [for the last 2 years],with minimum toe in at the front. IE the minimum end of the BMW specs, and although the outer edge scrub hasnt fully gone, its a lot less than before...
The front cant be altered for camber.
The rears are set to the minmium end of the camber range, this helps to stop the inside edge of the rears from scrubbing...
Hope that is of some help...

They looked identical to mine before I changed them. I put it down to it being a heavy motor and with enthusiastic driving etc,  to me it's to be expected. My rears have 5mm. The garage (ATS) reckon it's very common for x5's to do the shoulders due to weight for the front and the squat/angles they achieve at the rear when you push the go pedal firmly. The rears wear the inner edge apparently. They didn't even try to take my money by offering an alignment check so I took that as maybe a good thing??????  :)

I had our X6s alignment done when fitting new tyres around October.
The garage done a free check and then advised putting on their Hunter system as they said the car would have been fighting with itself, front to back, going down the road.
Front tyres were worn a bit worse than the pic.
Not cheap but neither are the tyres.

Thanks everyone.  The front left is wearing quick enough that I may have to replace before I can get an alignment done.

Tyres are about 4.5mm

Was looking at continental sport contact 5 tyres as they come in xl 106w and star rated.  Just need to check if I can get matching back size too as I dint really want mismatched makes.  Fancy diff make a I don't feel the Bridgestone grip as well as they should.

For now I would just fit front though.

More research todo.

Be interested in how you feel about the Contis in due course.  I wanted them when I changed the full set last year - from Dunlop to Bridgestone - as I could not get the Conti in the right sizes.  The Dunlops wore out in under 14,000 miles a set!

Can't say I have ever noticed a grip issue with the Bridgestones that are now on the X6 except in really icy conditions, but I have 19" Pirelli winter tyres for that season.

Hi,

I had exactly that issue . I found a local garage with a Huntsman laser machine. Although all corners were within BMW specs, I made him adjust the fronts to the limit of the BMW specs and since then my fronts wear absolutely perfectly even and I have had 3 times the mileage out of the second set of tyres.
I also got him to adjust the negative camber on the back and those tyres now wear far more evenly.

Regards,
Nat.

When I got our X5 about 3 years ago I also had some front toe and rear camber taken out and also fitted Mich Latitude Sport 3 tyres, got 20k out of them so far and still going strong.

I confirmed I can get also get conti sport contact 5 rft *rated for the rear too, so have just ordered 2 front tyres and plan to replace rear with conti to go back to a matched set in due course (if they are any good)

Hunter alignment asap to take out some toe!

£230 each Inc fitting

They have placed highly in reviews so fingers crossed.

Update again soon

Update.

Had both fronts replaced with the continental sport contact rft about 2 weeks ago.

Then today managed to get a day off and pop into ninemeister (a Porsche specialist with Hunter alignment close to me)

Just over an hour.  £99 and the place is lush. Full of some amazing cars.

Image

Surprisingly no issue with the fronts.  They even put the car on ramps to check for suspension or bush issues that may not have shown up but nothing wrong! So I'm no closer to why they run out on the edge? !

Rears out so corrected.

All in I'm pleased I know it's been checked. Let's see how they wear.

Conti tyres seem really good but tbh I haven't pushed the car much yet and the steering feel in an x5 is pretty benign anyway

Next up I have white worm and lacquer chipped wheels to sort.

The worming is a defect, and will be replaced under warranty (don't know the age of your car). I'm waiting for a call to have my rear offside wheel replaced for this exact issue
