Hi all, I have a leak coming out of the rubber O ring on the oil filter housing.
2001 4.4 Sport
On cold start up I get about 1 shot glass of oil leaking out of O-Ring seal.
Once the engine heats up this stops, it does not leak whilst driving/ reving
It has been very cold recently below 0 most nights.
I replaced the O Ring (BMW original) today as the original had a kink in it (not stored correctly).
It's still doing it after. Any ideas??
I checked to see if the new oil was over filled but it looks ok. I did not use a Torque Rench to tighten the filter housing, always done it by hand.
Not sure whats creating the pressure on start up.
Thanks

Oil Filter O ring Leak
Re: Oil Filter O ring Leak
Something is obviously causing the pressure when the oil is cold and less viscous! I wonder if the breather would cause this? If there is a blockage somewhere that isn't fully blocked therefore the oi'l isn't flowing too well through it until warm?
A shot glass every cold start up is going to get expensive!

Thanks for coming back, could be due to the cold mornings we've been having and it either doesn't get driven weekdays maybe once for short distances, at the weekend it stretches its legs.
I thought the Oil breather issue was more for Diesels,

I've heard this is not an easy DIY on the 3.0 but could not find a write up for the 4.4L, any idea of the time it should take a professional (not me) to replace a separator on a 4.4L?
BTW Mileage is low @ 50,000 miles,

Re: Oil Filter O ring Leak
only time we ever see a problem is when the seal gets cut when is goes into the tube where the filter is. make sure when you fit it you lube it well with new oil or a bit of grease so its doesnt grip and tear on its way in. the only other thought is has the top got a crack in it that only shows up under high pressure. oil pressure is higher when the oil is cold ??
good luck

Re: Oil Filter O ring Leak
I'm going to drain down a little Oil.
I could not get a good reading today, no clear line on the dip stick. I still think I may have overfilled in a recent Oil Change.
Took it on the motorway, performed well no leaks once hot, still loving the V8
Slight drip when I cold started from the O Ring, stopped within 30 seconds.
i'll tell you how i get on.
