When the rear diff went on mine there was no drive and the AA recovery plugged in and announced "not good mate says no output on the gearbox"
When it was at the BMW specialist I use it took them 10mins to find the real issue broken diff. There was no noise or warning just all drive disappeared while driving at 40mph.

The diff was £900 from memory the Warranty company paid half plus all the labour, the most frustrating thing was the wait to get it from BMW not an off the shelf part it seems. The garage could have rebuilt the diff but the warranty company said new OEM part.
4.6is X5 Estoril Blue (current)
4.4 X5 Sport Topaz Blue LPG (now gone squashed by a tree)
Subaru Outback 3.0 Rn Star Silver (current)

Pass, but he seems to know what is needed and may well have the right tools.  Based on much older car tech, I thought diffs needed very careful build tolerances and pre-loading of bearings which needed dial gauges and very specific torque settings.

I don't believe BMW themselves do anything other than a straight swap.  No rebuilding allowed.

I might be calling on you yet then, I'm only in Rossendale!

Hopefully have an update on here late. Had the car taken to a local garage and they'll have a look at it.

Update:

The garage called. A driveshaft had popped out of the diff,  it seems to have seated back in securely and everything is working again!

Fingers crossed that is it and I can start enjoying the X again.

Cost of repair - £30!

There can't be many repairs on a BMW that come in under £40!  What caused it to pop out?  Any clues?
