Could also be a failed pressure cap so system will vent instead of retain.  Should be visible around the cap.

If you can borrow a pressure tester for Collins systems that will find it too.  Sniff test simplest of course  :)

Im perhaps not adding much other than to reiterate we haven't seen any reported head gasket failures on the forum as far as I can recall.

As for Steel-Seal, Im really rather sceptical of anything that can mend a blown head gasket just by popping it in the coolant. The pressures, heat involved etc would all suggest that it probably isn't possible.

Yeah.... gotta admit... watery goo to seal a head gasket does sound suspect...but Ive had friends use tgis stuff in performance engines on track days & it kept a vehicle going for years after treatment...

Just spotted the cooling dropped by 1 pint since yesterday..
AND
there was some mucky gunk floating in the water...

Any way,
Bearing in mind the engine has 170,000 miles on it...
how long does a Head gasket generally last on a 3.0 D Sport ?

I was going to throw a couple of cans of Steal-Seal into it & hope it seals it ?

Any ideas on this ??

Update Guys n Girls...

I think X5 Sport has the answer, that a week rad cap is the most likely...
The car has done some 4,000 miles since topping up & not lost a drop..

The logic says the cap is the likely candidate as the weak point, as she was driven VERY hard the night in question & the heat & pressure forced a venting at the weakest point.

Since then, simply done motorway mileage generally 80mph max at night or less, & not lost a drop since.
I will invest in a new rad cap shortly.... but for now, I'm greatly relieved that the engine is OK.

Many thanks to all for then great input & suggestions.
