Post by IanP » Sat Dec 03, 2016 7:54 pm

Going to try and arrange a test drive in a 4.4tt next week. Anyone know of anything specific to look out for? Cheers

Hi

From what I have read the newer F15 has an 8 speed box and that should be an improvement over the older 6 speed on the E70.

I guess the ride may be important thing to you as it will have the standard wheel is 20" and option is the 21" wheels and it may make a difference so worth checking and yes they are run flats. They all have adaptive M suspension (think it's electronically controlled) and you should find it compliant but firm when combined with spirited driving, as I do on my early E70, but in honesty it was no worse than my old E53 with 20" wheels, but then I like a firm ride on my car.

The only other thing is the standard car spec was ok, but there are a lot of options you could add increasing the original cost of the car massively.

So make sure whichever car you decided on it has the extra bits you need/want. The reason for saying this is I know retro fitting on the earlier E70 is very, very complicated if not impossible and very costly to do. So logically it will be more complicated on the later F15, so if you wanted say a heated steering wheel or surround view cameras, then make sure it has them.

I have only seen 1 car for sale last year with the B&O sound system and that originally cost £111k and was still up for more than a new car when it was 2nd hand. Apart from that just usual checks if it's a secondhand car.

Finally watch out for a big grin appearing on your face if you press the accelerator pedal to the floor in M mode as that means you will probably buy it there and then :))

Good luck and let us know what you think.

Petrol stations  >:(

My F86 X6M averages 18.8 MPG.

576 BHP program the M buttons and these cars can fly. Actually feels unnatural that something so big is so quick of the mark.
One test drive and I am sure you will be a fan.
Both my 21 inch summer wheels (Michelin non run flat tyres) and my 20 inch winter wheels have non run flat tyres fitted as standard.
If the car is used you should be able to negotiate a massive discount.
Mine was a March 2015 X6M with loads of options list price around £108K from memory, car was in a BMW showroom for about 3 months (I know because I visited it every 2 weeks and made silly offers) in the end in I bought the car with 4,000 miles on the clock and one owner BMW for £76K including the 5 year service pack.
I have had no issues and car now as 15,500 miles on the clock.
If you intend buying make sure the BMW running in service as been carried out on time. You can check this in the
Bmw connected I drive.

Enjoy the ride.

Cheers for the replies. Hard ride is no problem as is high teens mpg, having run a 4.6 for quite a few years.  Just fancied a bit more power before I get too sensible. Will let you know how I get on

Couldn't find an X5M, so bought an X6M instead, 1000 miles in the first week at 17mpg (its an earlier one with 6 speed box so not as good on fuel as the later ones). Its hard to believe something so big can accelerate so fast.

Sounds like your driving it as it should be driven, mine is a 2015 8 speed and I am averaging 18.5 mpg,I do tend to drive in M mode most of the time. I have had an average 21-22mpg in normal mode but missed the exhaust noise.

Enjoy, they are a fantastic motor

Hi
Congrats on the new motor and its good see another petrolhead on the forum.

They certainly surprise a few people with the turn of speed, yet quite refined on a journey.

Well done..............keep the v8's alive.

One observation that's interesting BMW came out with the E39 M5 back in 1999 .
Mine has 130 K on the clock and if you drive it like you stole it does 18.5 MPG. ( and has done consistently the 12 years I have owned it .  If you drive it like miss daisy @ 70mph on cruise it does 28 MPG.

One of the benefits of turbo charging engines these days was  the improved efficiency I.E MPG.

I know an X6M is 5185lbs ag the E39 4025lbs but still with an X6M averaging 17 MPG and an X5M 8 speed managing the same 18.5 MPH it would look to me as turbocharging is not all its cracked up to be MPG wise.

So much for progress.
