Gearbox quality

Post by andym3 » Sun Nov 27, 2016 6:57 pm

Some of you may know that I sold my E53 a few months ago due to the gearbox failing!
It was my 3rd X5 & the 2nd one where the gearbox had gone!  :-[
So I replaced it with a Chevrolet Captiva ltx, it's a very nice motor but it's not a BMW!  :'(
The reason for buying it was mainly it had a manual gearbox! Have been a bit fed up with auto gearboxs failing on me!  :))
Anyway my obsession with BMW is stronger than I thought! But want to know- is the E70 autobox stronger than the autobox that's in the e53? If I got a e70 am I going to need to worry about the autobox still?

Here's a couple of pics of my Chevrolet

Based upon what is seen on the Forum, there are very few E70 gearbox problems.  ZF introduced a second version though what the actual differences are I know not.  Stronger mechanicals better able to handle the torque would be my guess.

Those that have packed up seem to be just shear bad luck rather than an endemic issue.
