Fault scanner / change car settings

Post by dubwud » Wed Nov 09, 2016 9:28 pm

I'm sure this has been covered many times but I'm struggling to find a definitive answer, if anyone has any links to threads or websites then please post them.

I'm trying to source a BMW scanner or my 2005 E53 X5, which I can use to view fault codes, reset them, and also change vehicle settings (DRLs, Webasto heating and TV in motion being the main things I want to add/activate).  I've read a lot about the 1.4.0 eBay jobbies but few people seem to know conclusively what they can and can't do, and whether they work with Windows 8 or 10.

Any help greatly appreciated.  Moderators feel free to point me in the right direction of an answer close this thread if necessary – the answer is probably out there and it may just be my poor searching skills.

Jack.

You might also want to look at the Carly App and wireless dongle.  Plugs into the OBD2 port and allows you to do more than scanner 1.4.0 (written for XP and getting very long in the tooth now) does plus recoding certain functions.

Scanner 1.4.0 can be made to work with newer computers as long as you can find the drivers

Look at the Carly website for more info.  As long as you have a tablet (Android or IOS) it works well.  You can also email error logs to them for analysis.

:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

I've had scanner 1.4.0 when I had the X5,  no use with my 3 series or any modern BMW's. Also A PAIN TO GET IT TO WORK.
I now have Carly app on my ipad now, miles better, and works for most BMW 's, so it's future proof for you

Scanner 1.4.0, cheap and OK if you can get it to work. Will reset fault codes. Couldn't activate my Webasto though. It might have been a sheer coincidence but I did a full scan if the car and reset all codes and straight after one if my front PDC sensors failed. Like X5Sport has said you'll need an old xp laptop or the patience of a saint to get the right drivers. I haven't used the Carly app yet, too bone idle to sort it out

I bought the Scanner 1.4 a while back.
Works fine.
Used it to get the Webasto heater working on the built in timer. Alarm to chirp going on and off. TV to work when moving, although this is pointless as the reception isn't good enough.
Track down faulty PDC sensors, plus a few other things.

Carly works brilliantly. Plus you don't need a tablet - iphone app works well and I think there is an Android phone app as well. Beats faffing around with old laptops and battling with driver compatibility. Its worth the £60 or so and can be used on many BMW models, not just X5s.

Hello again X5Sport, nice to know you’re still knocking about on the forum.  Thanks for the response.  I’ve read a bit about the Carly App which sounds like the right way to go.  I have an iPad which I could use so that’s not a problem, it’s more a case of what can and can’t be added.

Only DRL functions for the E53 on 1.4.0 is the USA option which leaves your indicators lit all the time, or you can have the dipped beams on all the time, or high beam on a low setting/ reduced brightness .
It wouldn't t just do the angel eyes alone.
Only got the Carly app when I got the 3er.

as Horizon said unfortunately the option to have the angel eyes on permanently (which is what I was looking for too) wasn't available
