Ahh , okay ,..will try that,...although having said that it dont seem so noticable now,..must have got used to it !
It dont do it if you dont actually stop,..like at a roundabout,..if you can give it a little throttle before it drops down it wont do it ... but I've noticed it when parking.
If you draw in slowly its hardly noticeable.. but if you brake harder it gives the bump,... almost like giving someone a tow behind you who hasn't got brakes !! hehe.
Thanks for reply..

Sport mode will enable 1st gear at pull away, normal 'D' will prefer 2nd unless the load or temperature determines it needs 1st.

Hmmm does that mean my car is knackered then bud, as since I have bought it pre and post gearbox rebuild if I am in sport mode (not that I use it that much but meh ). I come to a stop and if I want I can still drop into 1st, if I leave it alone it stays in 2nd? If I am in D it will always select 1st gear.

Not so good today then,......took the family for a day out in Edinburgh,...thought I'd give the X5 a bit run and give it a clear-out. Problems started well into the journey,... took off from a roundabout with a little more throttle than was expected ,..it kinda lurched down a gear, although I wouldnt have said I was at kick-down position,...and there and then it shut down with my first warning. Pulled over and switched her off,...just turned it back on again and away she went again,...
It drove fine all the way there and half way back till the wife took over the driving and coming up a fast hill she gave it a wee bit more throttle to keep it going and it kicked down again and done the exact same thing again !!
Looks like I will have to revert back to driving it with more caution from now on ....

Pass, I can only report how mine behaved both before and after rebuild.  In 'D' it only seemed to select D1 if the engine was cold or high demand pulling away.  In Sport it would use it all the time.  It could be no more than different software builds that make the difference.  I also had to have the Mechatronics Unit (gearbox brain) replaced after the whole system lunched itself.
