Phone tray is empty !!

Post by jonnyivy » Sun Oct 30, 2016 7:48 pm

This may sound silly, but after trying un-successfully to pair up my samsung phone to the TV/Satnav screen I'm starting to wonder is there supposed to be a "BMW phone" inserted into the slot under the centre armrest ?
Obviously the shape of the tray is nowhere near big enough for modern phones and I'm just wondering if there should be a "transfer phone" in there to work the bluetooth through ??
It was just a thought as it looks like the shape of the old nokia handset from many years ago...
My screen does read "searching for phone" when I press the telephone icon ...

What car do you have?  The phone cradle in both E53 and E70 models is made to take snap in adapters for vari Us makes and models -not the biggest latest iphone plus models or samsungs though. Their only function is for charging unless you have an early E70 where the cradle kit also has something to do with music streaming if your car has that option - CCC models only, not CIC.

You should be able to pair easily without use of a cradle.

You may need to clear down any old pairings on the E53 as you only have 4 'pairing slots' and you may have run out of spares.

Nokia handsets were not supplied with the cars, only a Motorola and Siemens, and only with the E53 (which is what your sig says) and then only if ordered new.

The Bluetooth version in the earliest cars may not work with new phones unless they fully support Version 1.  All current phones are V4.x.  Phonebooks may also not work.  You can change the in car phone module to the last of 14 variants and that might help, but they aren't cheap.  Try clearing first and see if that helps. :)

Yes it is an E53,....  55 plate diesel sport facelift,....  need to spend more time learning the menu and deleting previously stored phones then.
Just thought there may have been some sort of donor phone used that fits in there as there are sockets where it would connect to when inserted...
thanks for that info though,..

When I had an E53 in 2005 I had to buy a clip in phone tray for the box between the front seats that fitted the phone I had at the time.  I got an E70 in 2008 and had to buy another phone tray and phone.  At that time smart phones hadn't appeared! Customers had to buy a specific tray for their particular phone - BMW didn't fit one.

Incidentally,  BMW trays were always behind the pace of the phone manufacturers churning out new designs - when I got the E70 only 3 phones were available that fitted of the trays they made - all the other trays were for obsolete phones!  Yes, I've still got the Nokia from 2008 in the car, and it makes calls and sends texts - after all, what's a phone for!!!????

Kinda thought that was what was needed for mine Graeme,... looks like the shape of an old phone I used to have,...looks like it would click into this tray and connect to the screen without any need for bluetooth. In fact I'm beginning to wonder whether this car has bluetooth at all ?
I'm gonna spend some time tonight reading the instruction while sitting in the car ..

You should have a telephone option on the main screen unless the ULF (bluetooth) module has been removed. I am sure 55 plate cars came with bluetooth, but the units died or were removed possibly by previous owners.
You can also check if the bluetooth module is present - my E53 has the BT module in the boot, installed at an angle underneath the satnav and cd changer.  There is a sticker with a code on it which should be visible on the silver box - you need this code for this generation of car as it won't pair without it.

Pairing on these cars can be a bit tricky.  As recommended, clear all the pairings. There is a how to in the E53 section. Then follow the pairing procedure precisely.    You might be unlucky and have a very old ULF module which won't work with modern phones, if you have a vintage nokia it might be worth trying the pairing procdure again.  The cradle is NOT instrumental in the bluetooth working unless you have a very early prefacelift E53 with the built-in Motorola factory option.  I also used an ancient phone in my E53 in the cradle for years until the ULF module gave up and was replaced under warranty -it now connects perfectly to the latest iphones although no cradles are available for the latest big phones.
