So I've just recently purchased a 2005 2.5i X3, 120000 miles, FSH and VGC, ( see Newby post )
After removing the wheels to spruce them up, I drove about 5 miles no problems, then went out again and whilst driving uphill in a car park, 1st gear applying full lock, the car started juddering and the abs, 4x4, brake and tpms lights all came on,
The car feels jerky at low speeds, I've replaced the gear on the transfer case servo motor which made no difference, does anyone have any ideas before I take it into the garage,

X3's are notoriously fussy to the rolling circumference, and should be of the same tread depths and makes, and preferably star marked tyres. Are you running the staggered set up ( wider rear tyres) .did you refit the tyres back on the same hubs as they came off. Sounds like your winding up the transmission with incorrect tyre set up.
If this is the cas you can smash up the drive train.

Not got the staggered set up, 235/50/18's all round, would need to check regarding the star rated tyres, not had the car long so still learning, wheels went back on same hub as removed from,
Car drove spot on when I collected it, had a good run up the motorway with no problems, all seems to have started since I've removed the wheels, going to check tomorrow morning that I've not dislodged any sensors,

Star rating is not needed if not the staggered setup. ( star rating ensures that different profiles match when different width tyres are fitted on the Msport models. Make sure you have simular tyre depths front to rear. And. Heck to see if the wheels have been mounted correctly since removal

Quick update
Took it to the local independent garage today
After a scan codes for right rear wheel sensor supply, right rear wheel sensor air gap and steering wheel angle sensor where logged,
The mechanic suggested that the ABS ring had rusted and swelled causing the problem, he said it was a common problem,
Quoted me £180 +vat to fit new rings to both sides on the rear, possibly may need a sensor but won't know until it's been taken apart.
The car goes in on Friday, so fingers crossed

I've never heard of an ABS sensor ring rusting enough to make a significant difference. If it was that bad then I would expect it to snap! But then again, it could be possible so it will be interesting to see how bad it really is. The sensors themselves do go bad fairly often from what other owners have found across all of the X ranges.

I had the VERY same problem after doing only 100miles in my "new" 2004 X3 3.0i Sport a couple of weeks back... Took it to my local Indy BMW garage and had same diagnostic readings as you (Right Rear Air Gap etc.) and it WAS due to a rust ABS ring anbd sensor... Had them replaced (£167+vat) and since I have had it back it's been good as gold! Fingers crossed its the same for you.
