oh dear..

Post by themoog » Fri Oct 21, 2016 6:15 am

Got a bit of a problem I think.. I've got a knocking coming from my 4.4 engine or somewhere underneath. It only does it when its warmed up- silent when cold. It's got full service history and has has regular oil swaps. It did have the timing chain guides done 6 months ago which has a 2 year warranty I think (ill check later) but it doesn't sound chainy (!) or tappety if you know what I mean although they did do an oil and filter change so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
I did as search last night on YouTube and I think I found a Range Rover with a similar noise. If I get chance today I will record mine and post a link so you lot can throw ideas about.
I have noticed it before but very faint. It seems to have got more noticable in the last few weeks. Is there a way to check oil pressure?

I don't think it's the motor. I recon it could be the torque converter or flex plate. I found some vids on YouTube and the noise is identical. Either way it's gonna be expensive..

I had flex plate break.
Would knock under certain engine conditions.

Easy to replace but a lot to take out.

Unfortunately got it off to a tee...
Lol

Seemed to knock more when not loaded, ie light acceleration or constant speed with not a lot of throttle.

You may even be lucky in that it could be a loose bolt to the torque converter.

There should be a little black grommet on the cover plate to the bell housing which should give you access to the bolts.
You'll need to turn the ring gear manually to get each bolt to line up with the hole and then check they are tight.
You can also attempt to view the flex plate around the bolts.
I found my phone camera was good for that.
You can then zoom in on the picture and see if there are any cracks.

It is most likely around the bolt holes as that will be the most stressed point..

Morning just seen your post I had similar started about a month after my engine was rebuilt (gave the garage a moment when I rang and asked how good the warranty was !!)
The engine was fine at start up when cold or partly warm, when up to temperature the noise was there I guess when you have had something like this your ear is tuned for every sound. The noise sounded like a tap from the bottom end it turned out to be a blow on the rear cylinder exhaust manifold, new gasket noise gone.

Yes I know what you mean with the manifold. It's not a ticking or rattle but a knock. Sounds like rods but now I've heard torque converter/ flex plate noises on YouTube I think it's definately that.
