Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Celica - Thanks for sentiments & additional thoughts re HUD & adaptive suspension.....all noted.
NehalX5 . the last detailed post was particularly helpful. The assessment of CCC making sense to someone like me sat typing on a prior generation iPhone with a sim only contract
Private doesn't bother me but if I take plunge I may look into handheld fault code readers.
I think I wasn't far off 6 months sourcing my E53 so fully appreciate yours & partners comments.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Carly App and adapter will probably do most of what you need for fault scanning, and you can email the manufacturer with your logs too. They will then tell you more if you need it.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Duly noted with thanks.
I will read up on this. Having the Peake tool for use on the E53, I have not really taken much notice re Carly app & adaptors.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
I have recently posted on another thread re adaptive drive. IF I decide to source a circa 200& E70 I have decided that I will avoid adaptive drive to resuce risk of failure & associated repair bill(s) in my later ownership.
Now on to subject of runflats.
When looking at cars I had been interested in both 5 and 7 seaters.
IF I bought an E70 I would be likely to eventually want to swap out Runflats
Q1 : Can someone confirm there is NOT space in a 7 seater for storing a space saver below floor ?
Q2 : Any idea of roughy cost difference between runfllats and non run flats on various size rims ?
Annoyingly I think I may have to rule out cars with 7 seats unless prepared to stick with run-flats or drive around wirhout a spare - an aerosol of tyre gunk NOT appealing !
Answers to Q's above and any other comments appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Definitely no space for a spare in the 7 seater - at least not under the boot floor, as the 2 extra seats take up that space. One of the skinny spare wheel kits will go in the boot, not under the boot floor obviously, but will take up a lot of space.
Idea of prices- my 21" RFTs (OEM * rated Dunlops) are £350 a corner :'(. The winter 18" RFTs a bit cheaper at around £150-200 a corner. Just had a friend fit new 20" RFTs to an F15 at just under £300 a corner (OEM *rated )

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Thanks
Hmm...£1400 for a set of replacement tyres & that's for Runflats which many regard as offering relatively poor ride &/or handling.
Perhaps I need to look elsewhere for the car to replace my E53 or at least get a job that pays better wages !
The ability to run an E70 without Runflats appeals, firstly because rubber is cheaper and secondly as handling likely to be better.
Looks like an advertised 7 seater I was looking at needs to be ruled out.
Thus far during my E70 research it seems that the following are to be avoided if keen to avoid or reduce potential costs.........
2007 models - high VED
Adaptive drive - potential high repair bills
7 seaters - not practicable to switch over more cost effective NON Runflats
Pan roof - Nice until it fails then costs many £'s to sort.
The more I research the worse the maths. Perhaps I should avoid E70, consider another E53, an X3 or simply look at another brand altogether.
I like decent cars but also need to consider the Maths !

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Hi,
RE run flats...............just hang on in there one moment.
If you have 19" you have a much wider choice of tyres in RFT. They are almost on par with normals.
With 20" if you shop around you can get them for under £1000 and sometimes for under £900 ( Dunlop spotr maxx ) for a set of 4 fitted.
There is a cheaper option of 20" RFT tyre recently come on the mkt , from Atturo , the AZ850 ......about £680 from tyre leader for a set of 4 . Don't knock them , made by Federal and federal are in cohoots with Dunlop and bridgestone . Initial reviews are very good.

http://www.atturo.co.uk/az850.html
RFT are convenient. If you get a puncture, you can drive for 50 miles non stop , or stop, take out the compressor you got for your birthday out the boot & pump it back up and get going again . Assuming its a smal / normal puncture you can do that almost indefinetely till you get home. Thats what I do then fix / sort out at your convenience and very useful when my good lady wife is driving locally too.
I have a 40dSE individual. 20" Dynamic with Msport suspension delete and the ride with RFT is just perfect. I can't see what everyone else goes on about. Of course not being an M sport im not having my fillings rattled out.
As for other options...............just my thoughts ,
Top view reverse camera ..........a must. ( See explanation below )
Front camera = waste of money......
Pan roof......way too much trouble and it not a case of IF but WHEN will it go wrong. When it does its ££££
HUD......not for me , I am not in a fighter jet.
Comfort seats.............oh yes........supreme comfort.
Heated seats front and rear.............yes ( rear a rare option).
Heated steering wheel.....just very toastie on those winter mornings.
Key less entry................too much of a risk.
Electric tail gate..........not for me, I'm not a delivery driver and both my arms work.
Upgraded HiFi.....very nice and you can hear the difference.
7 seats...........very handy and good for resale.
4 zone climate control...........saves all the arguments.
SE allows you to have running boards. The added benefit of running boards is it protects the rear doors from getting peppered from road rash/chips as they are that bit wider. Also sill on M-sport not really designed to be stood on imho but kids/everyone does and all of them look tatty/scratched. It looks like a plastic sill with a bit of wet N dry stuck to it. Same with the extended arches.......SE are black plastic so show no marks, M sport ones usually full of chips.
The 8 speed box is really goo and worth it if you can stretch that far.
The twin turbo X5 really is more like a GT car............I once did Newcastle to kent in exactly 4 hours.
70 MPH is something like 1600 rpm..........
One thing that irritates me about the X5 . I like reversing into spaces and sometimes I reverse with the drivers door open looking backwards. If you are of a certain age you will have done this. You CANT do this in the X5. The second you open the door the gearbox lock itself into PARK. hence the only fool proof way to reverse is the top view camera.
As for the entertainment side of the X5, yes all the connectivity is good to have but unless it really is your bag I wouldn't bother with half the boxes i ticked. The prof sat nav is one to have and the extended phone / bluetooth works well.
I have had mine and done nearly 50 K miles in it. Nothing has gone wrong/fallen off. The only expense has been a set of disks and pads all round and I am just about to change all 4 tyres. Thats it.
I think the E70 40d is a superb car, and coming from 4 petrol V8's I was worried I might have been disapointed. It has exceeded my expectations and I think dynamically and quality wise it was a big step forward from the E53.
Im sure there is other stuff I have forgotten.................anyway, just my own opinion.
Regards,
Nat.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
My run-flats, 20" Bridgestone, were £860 fitted. I have a local bloke that does it and puts very little markup on which is probably why he is worth a mint! Everyone round here uses him. Dunlops were about £15 more per corner. My Pirelli 19" were £630 a set also RFT.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Thanks for decent replies - very useful. The comments re leaning out of door and being of an age certainly struck a chord for me having been driving over 30 years !
The car I was considering was as follows
Black 2008 3.0 Sd 85k miles (running style 239 21" rims)
Seller claimed it had......
7 seats
Xenons
Heated front seats (not rears)
Media pack with (sadly with business only hi-fi) and pro nav.
Dynamic pack (it's an msport so no side skirts)
Sport suspension (I assume part of msport package unless zero cost deleted)
6 cd changer
Far from the most generous spec I have seen but not the worst. The lack of reverse cam or a hi-fi upgrade to at least Pro would had been nice, but positively for me it lacked pan roof or adaptive drive suspension.
As I have to get into my car to go to/from work all hours including middle of night a heated steering wheel would be a nice treat. Comfort seats would be a great find.
Not buying new it is understandably near impossible to find a decent example of model/ variant required, priced sensibly, right colour and trim with essential options present and unwanted options absent !
A 3 owner vehicle claiming to have FSH the details of which I didn't get as far as verifying, ( no idea if BMW, Indy or local garage stamps). I also didn't get as far as HPI or VOSA checks.
Car when advertised was up for a firm £14k from an independent all makes trader....I take in house warranty promises with a pinch of salt but seller said he would stand by box and engine for 3 months. I know my rights under SOGA and am capable of sourcing own warranty if desired. It was a 3 owner car apparently.
HD pics looked ok - didn't get as far as seeking a tyre make/condition report.
I am mindful the firm £14k money asked iwas not ridiculous though I am not convinced "it books at £16k" (books is a vague term often used loosely - could mean anything from trade to AUC money).....this being what seller stated.
Running somewhat scared from talk of RFT tyre replacement prices (it's a 7 seater) I have provisionally dismissed the car and stepped back a bit.
2 further general questions :
Q1 : Was heated steering wheel available as an option from launch on all E70 range ?
Q2 : Is Webasto pre-heater standard, option or simply coding and handset required ?
Q3 : Anyone retro fitted reverse cam ?
One seller told me heated steering wheel was never available on PRE LCI - anyone know the definitive on this ?

I just found my dream car... Search for yours via Auto Trader #DrivenByMe
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... 1089580718
No transfer box, front diff, to worry about, got your twin turbo and as much space, also a well in the boot for a spacesaver, as I had one in my E60, and wonderful ride once I'd ditched the Runflats.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Apparently head office & rest of household dislike estate cars........I actually like E91 Alpina D3 Bi Turbo or 330i manual tourers.
In all honesty I would be happy enough running around in a residual busting older Lexus IS Sportcross........despite my enthusiasm for all things BMW & X series related.....the seemingly constant repair bills in E53 ownership have somewhat worn me down & taken edge off my car buying appetite right now.

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
Runflats on the E70 are definitely not the drive quality issue I had initially feared - bearing in mind my E70 came with ridiculous 21" OEM runflats /alloys, I was a bit worried initially, but had noth Ng to fear. The drive quality of an E70 is quite different and many steps up from that of an E53. The runflats, even at 21" are very comfortable. The 8 speed box and the twin turbo of my 40d make for sheer driving pleasure, even in the worst commuter traffic, bearing in mind I spend are und 4 hours a day in the X at present!
The winters I sourced were E70 OEM rims and tyres, 1season old, also runflats and very nice drive and ride quality too.
Try an E70 on runflats before writing them off totally, or just change to normal tyres if you prefer and pack a skinny spare in the boot if you buy a 7 seater.
Its agonising, though, when a car gives notice like this, always at inconvenient times! I know, I had similar issues only a few short months ago!

Re: Potentially consdering Pre LCI E70 - as yet undecided.
I agree with the runflat bit too. I find them fine on both 19" & 20" options. The ride is firmer but not overly so and having an E46 M Sport there is no suspension on that either! 21" wheels might be a different matter and those tyres are rare and VERY expensive for the right ones.
