First X5 but nervous

Post by Murphybarnes » Thu Oct 13, 2016 5:11 pm

Proposing to go for this but concerned about what I should be checking for. Condition is fair. Scuffs and stone chips and a little bubbling on inside of alloys.
Discs and pads being changed as caliper seized and sat nav being recalibrated or some such.
Therefore no test drive available until tomorrow.
Established garage offering service and mot and 3 months parts and labour warranty
Any thoughts or advice. Anything welcome.

Any advice appreciated regards first X5, what to look for, valuation etc.
Thanks.

My only advice would be to get an independant pre-purchase inspection, good luck!

I agree re getting an inspection....especially if unsure.

I would want confirmation of that mileage - that mans veeifying mot's & service stamp visits.

Read my buyers guide sticky in E53 section but DO get an independent inspection

Hi
as AW8 said read the E53 buyers guide

When you inspect the car check all electric windows, the heater and air-con,  check the mirrors work, door locking, check for damp carpets in footwells esp rear ones as plastic shield behind door panels get ripped and the can let water in, check the air suspension. Check by pressing check control button on the dash display to see if any errors or if ok,

Also before staring when ignition is on just check you have all the lights up such as airbags and no one has removed a bulb to hide a fault.

Apar from that th usual car checks tyres brakes etc and then when on the test  drive check for the gearbox operation as some have had problems with them, also suspension bushes will be old and have wear so see if the car feels tight or a bit vague when driving

And if that is all ok then fine if not best to move onto the next x5 for sale as a good x is great and a bad one is expensive to fix even if you can diy

Hi

I see h model you are looking at is the 3.0 petrol, you may also wish to onside the bigger 4.4 as there is little difference in fuel consumption but the bigger engine give the car better performance or the 3.0d which has a lot of torque and a lot better fuel consumption

And yes there are a lot of X5s for sale

It does seem rather high priced for a 3.0i,  but if everything else checks out and you are happy then go for it.  Having had a 3.0i for a few months myself, I would second the opinion that they are a bit underpowered and there is no fuel advantage against one of the V8s as the engine is having to work really hard. Plus the GM gearboxes on that model are known for some problems.

Lots of good advice. Still waiting to here back from garage. The V8 does sound tempting. Budget is £7000 tops. I'm being slightly lazy looking at local garages. Back to the Internet methinks.
My wife was lucky enough to find an absolute mint sorted Z4 recently for a lesser budget and I'm hoping to do the same with an X5.

Go for the Diesel, bags of torque and affordably good on fuel.
The Diesel can't be compared with the likes of the same era Disco,s or Showguns, it s much much better.
My advise is testdrive them all first ( 3.0, 4.4 and the 3.0 d, go for the facelifted ones )before you buy either variant.
Good luck with the search, and beware there are loads of rough unloved ones out there.
Remember lots of folk offload cars for a reason.

3 litre whilst underpowered in comparison to the v8 are absolutely bullet proof. It's a great engine with a good reputation. I found mine was more than adequate for London driving and never had an issue with it.

Diesels from 2004 give you V8 torque but without the fuel bill or soundtrack.
