Thatcham may have further details however I imagine house break ins with stolen keys is the main approach, followed by the OBD port being used to program a new key. This can be prevented with something like the Autowatch Ghost.
In terms of switching to regular tyres, here is no way it invalidates warranty - I switched my 335 to Michelin PSS tyres - this is a safe bet since BMW use these tyres themselves on all M cars.

Actually that article is a bit misleading - its a list of cars that are fitted with trackers. I also found this:
The top 10 stolen cars

Audi S3: 8.6
Land Rover Defender: 5.8
Land Rover Range Rover: 3.8
Audi Q7: 3.7
Ford Escort: 3.6
BMW X5: 3.1
Audi A5: 3.1
Mitsubishi Shogun: 2.4
BMW 5 Series: 2.4
Toyota Hilux: 2.4
