Boot lights, either push the latch down with your screwdriver (in the lock) or unplug them.

The rest - hold the interior light switch for 8 seconds. This only works on the cabin lights, not the two boot ones.

The boot lights go off after about 30 mins anyway, When I'm fishing and have the boot open I tend to pop the bulbs out.

When working in the boot area as i have been doing a lot lately i always take the key out of the ignition open boot up then turn off interiour lights by pressing the middle button before closing the car door.(opening will re activate the lights)and then with your car keys or as Sanj said a screwdriver push up on the top tailgate auto latch and the latch will engage and turn off the boot lights

The lights do eventually go out as dweeb said but i wouldn't leave mine on for 30mins as every little drain seems to affect these x's.

To turn all the lights off, first hold down the internal lights button in the overhead console for about 10 secs, that disables the interior light.

For the boot lights, with the lid open I use a screwdriver to close the latch so it thinks its shut.

my aux heater is now showing the fault" combustion fan error"...it can be heard to start up and run fine then always cuts out at a difinative time after switch on. any ideas?..

Hi,
I've recently had my heater replaced under warranty as it was not working correctly, you could hear the combustion fan start but it would not fire. The fan would then cut on & off & then eventually shut down.
This would happen when starting the car & also when using my remote start.
This happended in the summer so I pulled the fuse & left it untill it went in for some other work.
Anyway, I asked for the faulty heater back & last weekend I stripped it down to see what was inside.
What I found was what looked like hard melted plastic ( almost tar like ) in the combustion chamber. I thought it could even be a build up of soot if the heater was running too rich & hence this had caused it not to fire up.
Interestingly it advises in the handbook to fire up the heater every month for 5 minutes ? Problem is I don't know how you are supposed to do this if you haven't had it set on the OBD or a remote of some sort.
I suspect there are a lot of X5's on the road where the heater has failed & the owners are no the wiser as the car works fine without it, albeit it takes longer to warm up.

Have the same fault.

Waiting to hear back from Webasto support but at first guess, the combustion fan needs replacing.

Will keep you posted.

I have e53 with webasto thermo top z diesel.
I connect pin 1 to +12V but nothing is happen.
I want to ask - what I miss
Outside is -5C, i have fuel, liquid temp is low, but nothing.
I presume - low voltage... I start the engine and then check again... nothing...
Any ideas?

hello!
all i can think of is to check the fuse. on my 2005 model it is fuse 59 located in the glove box area. 20 amp i think.

it works when it wants. when all bmw conditions are here.
but never starts when i connect pin 1 and +12v
but i haven't heating on monitor
only ventilation
is this a problem?

regardless of aux heat on monitor - +12v to pin 1 should start and run the heater until +12v is removed

Making the contact at pin 1 is a possible problem.

Paper clip would not work for me, so I used a sewing pin pushed in 5mm or so.

if i understand clear - no matter of outside temperature, liquid temperature, battery voltage, i have 3/4 fuel, aux heating is not unlocked in my car, if i give +12 V to pin 1, heater will start?
may be... but reality is so sad-nothing.
after my manual try to start heater i start the engine, outside temp -2C, heater starts. 30-40 sec after engine off - heater stop all activity.
my car is so proud - i can't start heater when i want...
my car owns me...
and may be it hates me, not heats me.

To the issue of enabling auc heater option by means of coding it available in BC.

As standard additional diesel heater (Webasto) is installed into all X5 E53 3.0 diesel versions. If not selected from dealer it's only used as additional heater for getting engine temperature to normal operation temperature fast to minimize polution and reduce engine wear. So it's only on when engine is on until needed temperature is reached.

When using DIS or other coding software just to retrofit it (without any mechanical or electrical work) as result option is available in Board monitor but it will only run for few seconds before shutting down as ChewingBacca and others have discovered.

To make it work following preparation needs to be done. (In this examble X5 9/2004 with IHKA and large board monitor 16:9)
1. Code park heating option through Retrofit (if using DIS, I presume that users are familiar of using this software)

2. Make sure PIN no.2 grey/black-wire is occupied in climate control unit connector X610 (this is a later model 26-pin plug). If not occupie it with 0.5mm^2 cable. This is the +wire for extra water valve used in park heater applications. Without this heater control module receives an error and shuts down heater.



Y1 = original additional water valve (insert resistor here, you dont have this water valve unless you decide to purchace one)
A11= climate control unit

In my case wire was connected and the other end of plug was found under auxliary heater


3. Connect grey/black-wire from x610 with resistor 10ohm (20W) and other end of resistor to ground. This will simulate water valve. In original solution this valve is used for shutting down water circulation from engine to only heat cabine when park heating. You can also add the original water valve ($$$ from BMW).

4. Since your car is not equipped with park heater-option from factory the climate control unit needs to be changed to one with park heating functionality. In my case 64116927900 was changed to 64116927901 (see ETK for correct part number/model/year)

Now you have the aux heating functionality through Board computer with timing and direct on functions.

Hope someone finds this post usefull.

Very useful - it explains why attempts to enable aux heating from the OBD simply by bringing up the timed / manual start options on the display via a scanner don't work!

I have a 2006 3.0d without auxiliary heating (although the harness plug for the third water valve is present - cable-tied back under the Webasto)

Anyone know the ~ cost of the hardware to enable aux heating (valve, bracket, hoses + clips etc) - and whether you need a different H+V panel or if the existing can be re-coded (if not, I guess the cost is likely to be prohibitive)
