E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Motormender...if the thermostat had failed would you get any oil around the seal where the pipe coming down joins the square steel box? ...i ask as when doing some work previously i noticed some oil there...not a lot but enough to catch the eye and concern me a little

Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Hi folks, removed the EGR valve yesterday and there was a bit of gunge but nothing excessive, cleaned up and replaced, going to run like this for a week then disconnect the vaccum pipe next week and see if that makes any difference to the mpg. Do I have to tape up the actual vaccum pipe as well as block off the flexi pipe when doing this ?
Is the EGR bypass worth doing as a permenant fix ?
Regarding the engine breather, my car is 56 registered so wil have the modified breather, am I correct in what I have read saying there are no parts to clean or block up on this style of breather or do I still have to renew the cartridge ?
Thanks for everyones comments and assistance, it has turned out to be an interesting thread.
Cheers

I'm very interested to see if what you have done/do solves this as hopefully there will then be a relatively short and simple list of things to try.

hi
no the thermostat will not cause an oil leak. it will just let water pass through it when it shouldnt and slow down the cars warm up process. most cars only have 1 thermostat but being a bmw they feel the need for another.

I would say not to bypass the EGR, I think it would have a detrimental effect on your consumption... plus if the EGR works fine, so does the car, so there is no gain in bypassing. Up to you though.

I bypassed the EGR on my 530D.
I decatted it at the same time when I replaced the turbo.
I gained 5mpg but I don't know if that was the decat or the EGR bypass.

no the thing with the elbow is the egr valve itsself. if you follow the elbow down it goes to the sguare box and the egr thermostat will be on top. if i get one in at work tomorrow or next day i will take a pic or next time i take my engine cover off.
That would be great....I have no problem locating the dipstick....it's typing these replies to you fellow forum members
Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Just been reading this thread, i picked up my 3.0d e70 over the weekend.
I'm only getting 25 round town, was hoping for more than that if i'm honest.
Fantastic car though, well chuffed with it so far.

Wait till it's got a few miles on it - assuming it's new. We don't get much better than that on our E53 in Mlton Keynes. Bl@@dy roundabouts everywhere . The X6 is giving 30 now with almost 1400 miles on it.

20 on a diesel - ouch! Used to get over 20 on a 3.0i. Mind you my diesel E70 almost has to be towed to get 30!

Wilko, same advice to you as I do everyone else about MPG... work it out for yourself based on a brim to brim. Don't rely on what the OBC is telling you. I get your quoted figures and mine is a 4.8 litre petroholic!

Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
thats a nightmare mate. we always remove these with a battery impact wrench. it may seem a bit crude but seems to be much kinder on the plugs and gives them small impacts rather than applying force until it moves or snaps. we do it on fiesta and ka spark plugs too. works every time. you are going to have to get the drill and easy outs out now. not to badder job but a bit daunting. hope you get on ok
