Tyre wear on outer edge?

Post by sharpharp » Wed Jul 20, 2016 11:28 pm

Anyone else have unusual tyre wear towards the outer edge?

Was checking the tyre depths and while I have around 4.5mm to 3.55 across the face of the tyres, the outer edge is down to 2.5mm, I have the staggered setup, but it's alarming how badly worn the edges are... and this is without thrashing the car around.

The pressures are correct and had them checked last time I had it in for a service.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Pretty much standard across the 'X' ranges.  Can be cured by having a 4-wheel alignment carried out and set to better config.  Staggered set-ups seem to suffer more due to the wider wheel geometry.

Yes my front tyres are wearing on the outer edge aswell. The plan is to have the alignment checked under warranty before I put the winter tyres on in Oct/Nov. Some threads suggest it's due to runflats having a very rigid sidewall and tyre pressures should be increased by a couple of psi. Juries still out on that one.

Got mine done about a month ago cause I had out tire on fronts and inner on the rear.  Mine are 20" staggered, the chap told me to bring it in every 3 to 4 months for a free check cause these cars a notorious for it

So the fronts will wear first on the outer edges, and the rears wear on the inner edges?

For comparison, the Allroads (Audis are front heavy and understeer) wear the outer edges off the tyres at a fairly healthy rate. On the rear, it is just perceptible that they wear the middles out first - which means with rotation that one can even it out a little - I think it was torque biased to the front wheels.
The Subaru had 50:50 power split (older estate model) and did similar but not so pronounced. It was easier to balance out the wear by rotation.
The Land Rover wore pretty evenly front and rear - but to be fair it wasn't easy to go for a spirited drive in that one!

Bit off topic but what is the torque bias on with the F25?

Here is a pic of the Rear tyre:

Image

Wear (from the inside out grooves in millimetres):
4.6 (Inside)
4.3
3.7
2.35
1.80 (Outside lines)

All the other 3 tyres have similar readings.

Is it worth changing the tyres if the outer edges are below 2mm? Or is it worth waiting till the centres get down to around 2mm as well?

Hi I am sure it is 25% of the tyre is taken out of the equation so 75% needs to be over 1.6 MM , unfortunately with reduced tyre wear , stopping distances also increase so looks like you are nearly 50% worn . If it was me I would change them , it is the only thing keeping you on the road .
I was past a dealers the other day they were advertising 4 wheel a line ment for £29.95 with an mot booking may be worth asking !
