Oil level check

Hi, my X5 is a 3.0 XDrive Diesel with that annoying oil level sensor, I recently had the car serviced by BMW dealer so assumed there was nothing to check, I have just checked Vehicle Status which now says the oil level is too high but there seems to be no way to reset the level check so it does it again. Does anyone know if the oil check can be re-done or is there a physical way of checking this. The car has done 40K miles and I was recently charged £180 by the dealer to reset the brake pad warning which was saying just 1000 miles left even though the pads were still 6mm thick so I am a bit reluctant to get the dealer to look as I am sure they will just say the sensor is duff and charge me a fortune to sort it.
Why can we not have a plain simple dipstick like every other car, all these sensors are fine if they work

I thought the oil level check was continuously updated rather than a once only?

I have had the same issue and was accused by the Dealer of overfilling it.  I pointed out they were the only ones working on the car so the sorted it themselves at no charge.

The dipstick is at the back right of the engine by the jumpstart point.

Hi, thanks for the picture of the dipstick, I checked it and it was overfull by about a litre so took it back the the dealer who had serviced it about 2 months earlier and they drained it free of charge, just as well as there was no way I was going to pay for them to correct their mistake. Apparently when they do an oil change they just dial up the amount of oil specified for the engine and pour it in so it is very dependant on how well the old oil is drained.

I should imagine you'll not be impressed to learn that the brake pad service light can be reset yourself in just a few seconds then - £180 is a shocker!
