AddBlue consumption

Post by Barry-C » Wed Aug 10, 2016 11:08 pm

My 3.0d SE consumes AddBlue at the rate of approx. 1 litre per 1000miles, some of which was towing a caravan, if this makes any difference.  Is this normal or excessive?

They don't tell you that when you buy an X5.

My Skoda with the 2016 EU6 EA288 2.0D engine uses Ad Blue at about the same rate.

Generally used in larger Diesel engines it's a solution that is injected in the exhaust after combustion that reduces NOx levels from the exhaust which in turn helps cars achieve the required emission goals set by various countries etc.

On a BMW it's two separate tanks located in the front and both are filled normally by BMW albeit you can fill yourself.

I'm not sure of the exact amount a 30/40/50D will require but 10L costs about £15 off the net and you can change it yourself if you're careful. You will pay around £25 for BMW to fill the tank and it lasts anywhere from 9000 miles to 16000 miles depending on how you drive.

Most importantly the adblue counter ticks down. This is seen when you start the car and miles left can also be checked in iDrive/service requirements.

When you get to a critical level you will get a red warning triangle and should you let the car get to 0 miles............

IT WON'T START!

So unlike a service that's overdue BMW have decided it's important enough to insist adblue is always present in the system.

Hope that helps  ;)

In simple terms 6% refined pig wee (urea) in water.  Trucks have had it for a few years but many larger EU6 diesel car engines need it now depending upon engine size.

VW played with their cheating software to try to avoid having to fit the systems to cars.

From next year new petrol engines get Gasoline Particle Filters as well so everyone gets to share in the evil devices, not just diesel folks.  Direct Injection petrol engines now produce up to 10x more particles than Diesel engines.

Mine used 10 litres in 8k miles with no towing. Mostly used on 15-20 mile journeys.

The dealer put about 15 litres in with the excess 5 litres being deposited all over the engine bay and front of the car  >:(
