Air con problem
Air con problem
Anyone know where the air con compressor relay is located on the E83? Been having problems with the air going cold then getting that smell when the air con goes off. Had the bonnet up and can see the clutch engaging for about 5 seconds then disengaging for about 20 secs then engaging again and so on...
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Air con problem
It's in the under bonnet fuse box, which is next to the N/S suspension strut tower.
Held on with about 5 torx screws, be careful not to drop them as they are difficult to retrieve.

Thanks for that i'll take a look tonight when i get back.
Re: Air con problem
Just an update for those interested...it turns out that the air con doesn't work properly if the aux fan is broken which what turned out to be the problem in my case. Had the fan replaced and it seems to be working so far but i've only run the a/c for about 20 mins with no problems. Apparently to check if the fan works you run the air con at full speed and its supposed to come on, if it doesn't its likely to be the fan itself. I was quoted £674 for a new fan plus fitting (only takes 10 mins) from BMW but my mechanic found one for £320 from Motor Factors with a 2 yr guarantee. Anyway will update when i get chance to run the a/c for a longer period.
Re: Air con problem
We've had a couple of these seen in the last year, and the fan seems to be a curious beast. Testing it is a mare!
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Air con problem
Ok, came back on a long run from north Wales at the weekend and had the air con on for most of the journey and it is now working fine. It seems that if the fan isn't working then the A/C won't work either!! All seems to be well now, in that area at least.
Another problem cropped up... a really bad damp smell that turned out to be soaking wet carpets!!! Found the problem to be damaged vapour barriers on at least 3 of the doors Having a mare drying the carpets out but at least i've cured the problem (i think)
All fun and games with these cars eh ::)

Good to know about zircon solutions for in the future.
I know you say the door seals are damaged but does your rear washer work?
My old X3 had the washer pipe separate and that soaks the rear drivers side carpets.

Re: Air con problem
Yes the rear washer works and there wasn't any evidence of it leaking but i will check it tomorrow as i still have the carpets propped up trying to dry it out.
Re: Air con problem
I know its been a while since the last post but i thought i would update this thread. The carpets have been dry for a long time now and it has rained quite heavily a few times so it seems it was the vapour barriers that caused the wet carpet problem.
Hope this helps others.
