Rear tyre wear

So just had a service and they picked up both rear tyres had inner wear down to the wires.... To be fair they've been on there since I brought it back in 2013 so budgeted replacements soon but they still had reasonable tread depth.

Main concern is why this is happening - seen something about bushes but it looks more like rubbing to me as no progressive wear that I would expect with negative camber for example.

Wanted to get some thoughts so can get it checked out whilst tyres are replaced.

For info it was Sytner who did the service and whilst pointed out the tyre wear didn't give any reason as to how/why (just wanted to charge me £700 for two rears!!!!).

Tyres are Dunlop sport max run flats - 315x35 from memory.

Hello,

That looks excessive wear on the inside rears!  Can I suggest you get the tracking checked ASAP - both front and rear?  Please see my recent post to rickyclean about Avon tyres and tyre wear.

Thanks Graeme - the car is off the road till I get the tyres replaced on Saturday - sure they have a hunter alignment thingy there so will get that booked in too. Thanks though the fronts seem fine - we live in a road with those bloody small speed islands so you can drive over them by straddling them, wondered if the extra width of the rears were taking a caning from that?

Could be!! I've often wondered the same when driving over those cushion shaped humps!

I've just replaced all four and the tyre fitter explained to me all x5 do that to the tyres get to the end of its life, he said it was the camber that they are factory set with. Though they weren't worn quiet as bad as that but getting there

Thanks guys - will get the alignment and tracking checked. Just surprised by the sudden wear, I check regularly and that just seems to have happened super quick!

Id say nothing wrong with that personally.  If anything thats good if they have been on since 2013.  X5's are notorious for shredding rear tyres due to the camber they run to make them behave like a car.  I would just replace and come off run flat crap! bloody awful tyres, I had more punctures on run flats than any other car added together in the history of my car ownership.

Cheaper, better ride etc.

I might be wrong and it might be pub talk, but I though that X5s are known for eating the inside edge even when properly aligned

Mine did the same !

Tbh cars on its last warning what with tyre wear like this and stupid amount of stone chips that keep appearing on the rear arches and lower doors. I like the drive of the car but I only do 5k a year and I am putting tyres on every year near enough at 600 quid a pop and the lower half of the car needs restating every year to keep it tidy lol

Is the new modle any better for stone chips and tyre wear ?

If not I'll be looking at f pace

My old 535D used to eat the inside of it's rear tyres over not much more than 8000 miles or so.

Could well have been the way I was driving it  O:-)

I got more than 5k miles out of my rear tyres (oem rft), around 12000miles..
Is the geometry all correct?

As for stone chips, do you have the plastic covers on the rear arches? It was a known issue on the E70s.
