Roof racks (sport rails)?

Post by JF1980 » Wed May 25, 2016 12:12 pm

Hi all,

I used to put all sorts in my E53 - back seats down, passenger seat reclined and some blankets meant there wasn't much I couldn't shift.  Now I have my E70 and it's spotless inside I'm reluctant to do that same at least for a few years.  With that in mind I think I need a roof rack to get things like timber home from TP/Wickes etc.

Had a look at both BMW official and Thule bars.  Ouch the BMW ones are about £180 and Thule £250+!

I've been looking on ebay as well as at various online shops.  Seem to be many 3rd party options for £60-100 which look pretty much the same as the more expensive options.

Farad: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Farad-Roof-Ba ... SwdWBXPZZb

Wondering if anyone has experience with any of these brands (or other).  I don't want to spend a fortune on rails I'll use once every comple of months for a short trip - however I also don't want to end up with a huge dent in my roof/bonnet if the things give out carrying timber etc.

You are best keeping an eye out on ebay for secondhand ones , the BMW ones are the best as perfect fit to the car just be carefull though as they did 2 types one for the closed roof rails M sport version & one for the Se version you can fit your hand under that one . Unfortunately one doesn't fit the other so ask what they were on first !

Thanks that's not a bad idea, guess I can forget about bank holiday DIY though.  Suppose I should be able to look up the correct part number for the closed rail version.

For info, I got mine from eBay for 80 quid.
They are the BMW ones and only take about two minutes to fit.

Great, watching a couple now.  I noticed in one of the auctions one bar looks shorter than the other is that normal?

The front one is slightly wider but they can be adjusted to allow fitting in any position

Got myself a set for £69.99 - about the same as the 3rd party ones and like you guys said they will be a perfect fit.
