correct oil for 3.0d 05 reg

Post by fenj66 » Sat Jan 22, 2011 6:27 pm

hi all,
i am a bit confused now as to which oil i need for my upcoming change.
previously i have used castrol edge 0w-30 turbo diesel oil as i was sure this was the correct oil for my car.
i have come to look around for best prices for this years change and i cant find it anywhere. a look on castrols website now doesnt even list 0w-30 td, but recommends edge 5w-30, but its not the turbo diesel marked can. is it possible to use one oil for petrol and diesel engines?, i always thought they were a different thing.
cheers! :)

I topped mine up with 5w-30 the other day  as recomended by the castrol site ;) but like you i'm sure the same site used to say 0w-30
Could it be due to colder conditions etc :idunno:

I've owned the X (E53) for nearly 4 years now and when I first enquired about the grade it was 0W-30 - so I've never changed from that...

Castrol Edge 5w30 is still available that meets BMW LL04 and is for both Diesel & Petrol engines. You can buy it in Halfords For about £36 for 4 litres at present. It's in containers marked 'VW' but is marked up as BMW LL04 as well. When I last bought oil it was from BMW parts as the X now uses vey little and I didn't want a 4-litre bottle so I havea couple of 1litre top ups marked Catrol Edge LL04.

The newer diesels in the 'N57' series use 0w30 by default, and that is also Castrol Edge but is in bottles marked 'Diesel'. I wonder what subtle difference there is - apart from the rating.

I have just serviced my E46 and used Castrol Edge Sport 0-30w which is listed on the can as being suitable for the BMW and is LL04 equivalent. HTH

i think the best value oil about at the moment is the vauxhall oil. it is a very high spec and is full vw and bmw ll04 spec.i buy this in bulk for work and from memory its £19 for 5 ltrs. not sure if you have to be in trade club to get it at that price but worth an ask.
