"INTERMITTENT" check brake lining message

Post by kanewesley » Tue May 17, 2016 8:22 pm

HI..

I am intermittently getting the "BONNNNNGGGGG !!! check brake lining message"

I had it for a few days , took it up to my mechanic but when I got there the message had disappeared !

He had a quick look, the pads were meaty, said I had nowt to worry about so I came home.

Next day, same thing...message on for 3 days, then disappeared.

Now it's back on.

The pads look quite thick.
I don't believe it can be the sensor because I have read that as the brake pads wear, the sensor is destroyed and there is no going back with it. So once it's on...it's on !!
The fault keeps clearing so I believe the sensor must still be intact and not destroyed.

Is there a junction box, or a plug or connection or anything I can check and perhaps clean up which may contribute to a bad connection bringing the fault message up?

Any thoughts please !!

It can be caused by water ingress into the junction plug on the inner wing, the sensors only come with about a foot of cable with a plug on the end, this sits inside a so called waterproof capsule attached to the inner wing. This capsule can be prised alert to reveal the inline plug, seperatley the the plug spray with WD and maybe some grease on the outside of the plug once reconnected to further waterproof., also check for chafing of the wiring.

I am having precisely the same issue at the moment.......even changed rear pads and sensor last week as they looked a little low, but left the fronts as they were very meaty till.  Message went away for three days and hey presto, its back again today.

As I've had the rears renewed along with sensor I can only think the front sensor junction might have this water ingress issue?  Was even thinking I might have the front sensor replaced.  Brakes work normally, fluid levels all good, pads and discs all good too, rears new.

Is this a silly question......but could low brake fluid give that message....or would it say  "BOOOONNNNGGGGG ..... check brake fluid ? "

Horizon....thanks for that...I think I've seen a black plastic junction box under somewhere ,  I'll check in there tomorrow.....does the wheel have to come off ?

you can do it without the wheel coming off if you dont mind struggling

wd40 isnt the best thing to use it leaves a film on the contacts that can cause problems (rare but i've seen it a few times)
use contact cleaner or ignition sealer

I had this problem too and changed both sensors wires, they're cheap enough from Euro car parts and since then no more problems.
