8 months or so in and got my first problem with the X5.

My wife casually says "I went to drive the car today and it wouldn't start"  ::)

Dead battery, not sure what drained it but got it out of the boot (grief) and recharged it, then I shut the boot and it locked (more grief) so I had to go in via the rear seats to put the freshly charged battery back in, bit awkward as I'm over 6ft but it entertained the neighbours I suppose  :))

A load of warning signalson the dash when I reconnected the battery, but I had already checked the forum so a quick 'lock to lock' on the steering wheel cleared that  8)

Bit late now..
But you could have temporarily connected your battery to the jumping points under the bonnet to allow you to open the boot......

Not as funny to watch though....
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Spec sheet can be found from a number of on line BMW VIN decoders.  You only need the last 7 characters.

Re: Newbie with an X5!! 12 months, 1st fault

Post by WJB » Mon May 16, 2016 4:20 pm

OK so I've had the X5 a year now (almost) and it's been great, mot today and it passed with the only advisory being the two front tyres, the tester said it was a good car which has clearly had a lot of money spent over the years  8)

It has developed one problem though, the speedo has stopped working. They plugged it in and it's showing a clock fault.

Any suggestions? Will it need a new cluster or is it repairable?

BMW main dealer, specialist or can I diy it?

i had this happen just once, disconnected the battery for 20 mins and it never did it again.

The speedo is digital which usually means specialist repair as it may be a circuit board fault rather than the indicator itself.  I seem to remember others on here have had it done relatively easily.

Replacement Clusters need coding to the car in some way in order to get the mileage correct and prevent the 'tamper' tell-tale pixel lighting up.  If you do look for a replacement, make sure it is the same type and part number.  There are different versions depending upon engine and year.
