Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
This has some interesting information that might fix it but have not tried it yet

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
Sorted!
Fixed the DPF!
It's definitely a 2 man job.
Process goes like this.
Get car up to temperature,
Then get somewhere just off a dual carriage way or motorway and clear all fault codes. Then initiate a regen through DIS or whatever device you use.
(My temp as this point got to a max of 300 degrees c and back pressure of around 400mbar)
Once regen is enabled and requested put your right foot firmly to the floor. Maintain at least 60-70 with revs at least 3000rpm (you may need a lower gear for this)
You may see the regen activate momentarily. If it then goes to 'not activated' you will find a fault code (480a and 481a) either will prevent a regen from occurring.
This is important to know. Once a fault code is kicked up, even if it still says 'regen enabled' and 'regen requested' you will never get it to activate again until a new request for regen is sent and error codes are cleared.
Start from beginning.... Clear fault codes, request regen and hoon the bloody thing.
Thats why you need a second person doing this for you on the laptop.
You should feel a difference happening as soot begins to clear. Did this process 5 times and now completely clear. Temps 550-600 degs and 60mbar pressure. Sorted!

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
Run the quick test and when this is finished you proceed to the screen showing any faults and symptoms. Click the button at the bottom that says 'function selection'
then click the third option
'service functions'
- 'drive'
- 'diesel electronics'
- 'particulate filter'
- 'regeneration, particulate filter'
then click 'test schedule'
on the next screen click the 'regeneration, particulate filter B.........' Then click the green arrow on the bottom right and this will take you through the procedure.
To see error codes and clear them click 'control unit functions' (next to the arrow bottom right)
Scroll to the bottom and click 'DDE Diesel Electronics'
- Read Fault Memory
Might see
480a - clogged
481a - heavily clogged
- Delete Fault Memory
You can then see all the temperatures by clicking Diagnosis Requests under Delete Fault Memory
You can select multiple functions here
I did
coolant temp
Exhaust temp before cat
Enable, regen, particulate
Status, regen, particulate
Status, last regen
Exhaust-gas temp
Exhaust-gas backpressure
Then click display
You'll have to reselect these everytime you do a new regen and everytime you delete fault memory. They are useful to see what's happening with temps and backpressure and whether the regen is working.

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
Just done a quick reading and got the following figures
distance since last regen -18688
temp before dpf 159.0
backpressure 34.9 at 3000 rpm.
How do the figures seem?

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
Your last regen was 18k meters ago.
Your temp before cat is very low (was your car up to temp at this point?)
Back pressure looks good for 3000. Mine was around 350mbar at 3000.
What kind of issues are you getting and are there any error codes?

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
These readings were taken outside the house.
The only error is for the 4 glow plugs, these were changed around 3000 miles ago along with the glow plug controller due to the same error and slightly poor starting in cold weather.
The new glow plug controller was found to be faulty and was replaced again after just 400 miles but the glow plug error has been constant apart from the first couple of weeks when the whole lot were changed.

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
The temp might be normal then if the car wasn't completely up to temperature. The back pressure seems good too. What makes you think the DPF is actually blocked or not regening?

The fact that the last regen was a long time ago.

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
its 18k meters rather than miles so it's not too long ago.
but it can activate the regen then stop straight away.
I would say that your DPF is probably fine, if you are reading the errors from DIS and you're not getting either 480a or 481a then it's unlikely that your DPF is blocked.
The backpressure is the key indicator to a blocked DPF and it seems normal. Do a back pressure test under function selection and see if it comes back normal

Re: X3 3.0d man - list of issues
So the -18688 m is meters and not miles.
I thought it was miles that's why I was concerned.
Thanks for all your help
