Both mountain walking and low-level countryside walking are wonderful things, in their own different ways. I'm no climber, nor am I a winter mountaineer, but to answer your question, yes - I love it. As for navigation - I REALLY love Ordnance Survey maps and a good old fashioned compass. Lately I've created and printed one or two walks in Digimaps, but they don't compare to the feel of a folded OS sheet.

I'm a qualified freelance Mountain Leader, and agree with chubbs - map and compass all the way. My GPS is there as an emergency tool, and spends most of its life turned off.

I can imagine the simple beauty of reading a map and finding your way about is fast becoming a dieing art with modern technology in every aspect of life.  I still keep an A-Z is my car (just in case)

We still teach map and compass to the Air & Army Cadets.  No electronics in sight!  GPS doesn't work too well with a flat battery apparently.  :P

Same org, but only a Fg Off.  Been with it since 1974!  Just recommissioned after a 10-yr enforced break caused by a career change!  They gave me my rank back and I think Wingco is angling to make me a Sqn Cmdr - he asked me to come back 'in' a year ago.  Time will tell.

Small world! I'm the WATTO for S&W Yorks Wing. Good luck with the squadron if you get it.

This thread went from walking to flying in no time at all. Hope we don't have any astronauts around, or there's no telling where we'll end up , compass or no compass.

Flying?  In the Air Cadets!  We can't afford the petrol.. :))

My lot are all on a green adventure training camp wandering around Thetford this week.  Not an aircraft in sight!

Duke of Endinburgh's Award practice last weekend - all map & compass work.

I think they're about to do another 'Nijmegen March' training event any time now too.

I was in Snowdonia with them last summer.  The walking weather was OK for Welsh Ducks!  Even the maps got soggy.  :)

Did my MLTB (as was) Mountain Walking Leader's Course (Summer) in Snowdonia, many years ago. The 3-day expedition part of it was ... ...interesting! But it was fantastic. I learned never to say things like, "I think we're roughly hereish".
