Flaps behind kidney grill
Flaps behind kidney grill
Anyone know when the flaps behind the kidney grills should open up? I've noticed when after a long run and a fair bit of heat has built up its rather sluggish below 3k rpm then above that it goes like stink??? It's as if the intercooler is too hot. And even when the engine is pipping hot I get out with the car running but the flaps are still closed? Is that normal? Oh forgot to mention it's a 3.0sd ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/wink.gif)

Re: Flaps behind kidney grill
Depending upon the year they can be electric or airflow controlled.

It's a 08 and pretty sure it's electric as there's a wire to it and you can't push the flaps open, there is definitely a noticeable lack of power below 3000rpm when she's built up a fair bit of temperature, especially if it's stopped and heat soak sets in, just really weird that it only affect lower rpm and above 3000rpm still normal! It's like driving a very old school big turbo
) nothing nothing then woooooosh

Re: Flaps behind kidney grill
You also have two identical (I think) turbos, one of the reasons for the 40d was to use dissimilar turbos to get rid of the lag.
Are both your turbos OK?

Power delivery seems fine till a fair bit of heat sets in then I start noticing a fair difference, think i will need to have it looked at ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/sad.gif)

Re: Flaps behind kidney grill
Just a wee update, with the warmer weather the strange lack of power below 2.5k 3.0k was becoming more apparent. So it turns out the vacume pipe to the small turbo was perished, I'm presuming when it was getting hot under the bonnet the rubber hose became softer and didn't hold the pressure as it became softer with the heat. Had all the hoses replaced and happy days she's back to her rapid normal self!
