Not certain about the BMW version, but in the VW group it is a set of extra (plastic) underbody shields to prevent stones from impacting exposed areas underneath.
There is a reference on the E38 of it raising the ride height by 20mm.

Buy some 3M clear and cut it to shape #DIY
